Chonburi buffaloes race again Oct. 4-10

Buffalo racing returns to Chonburi the day before the end of Buddhist Lent in the province’s annual festival featuring games and contests.

Deputy Gov. Worawit Saisupatpon chaired the Sept. 9 planning meeting to prepare for the 2014 Buffalo Racing Festival held in concert with Chonburi City Hall and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

This year’s races take place Oct. 4-10 on the field in front of city and provincial government offices. The highlight race will be run Oct. 7.

This year’s festival features three different categories of racing for small, medium, and large buffaloes. There also will be a 13-wagon parade following the theme “Beautiful Sea, Delicious Kaow Lam, Sweet Sugar Cane and Bakery Products.”

Other activities include a buffalo “beauty” contest, more conventional pageants for young and older women, traditional Thai sports, a buffalo-breeding contest and Muay Thai boxing. Locally made products will also be available for sale.
