Gerry Cooney.

A tough day for the BB’s at the slowly deteriorating Bangpra G.C.  Slowly deteriorating can be defined as follows: tee-boxes torn-up and littered with debris, fairways parched with hardpan all around, and leaves and branches strewn here, there and everywhere.  The not so well-presented course was most definitely a contributing factor in an average stableford score of a paltry 28.

Some of the pain was alleviated by the pace of play – less than four hours – and the greens running fast and true.

A hearty “good to see you again” goes to our favorite player from the Land of the Rising Sun – Mashi Kaneta.  Mashi was out of action for a few weeks with medical issues but is back now playing off of 16.  He will undoubtedly reclaim his moniker “the bandit.”

Wednesday, Feb. 17, Burapha (blue tees) – Stableford

A-Flight

1st Julian Praibinge (5) 35pts

2nd Ed Graham (10) 34pts

3rd Patrick Crane (7) 33pts

B-Flight

1st Neil Carter (18) 37pts

2nd Tim Winder (25) 31pts

3rd Steve Durey (19) 30pts

Near Pins: Neil Carter, Ron Melvin, Les Cobban

Five newcomers overpowered the regulars to claim six of the ten paying positions at the much improved Burapha G.C.  Playing from the blue tees at 6,700 yards, only one of twenty-three players – newcomer Neil Carter – was able to play to or better their handicap.  We always enjoy seeing new faces, even if they do take all the dough.

As mentioned above, the track was in much better nick than two weeks ago: the tee boxes were well-presented, fairways mowed, and the greens ran fast and true – always a pleasure to play this lovely course, even if it is a bit pricey.

Friday, Feb. 19, Khao Kheow B & C (yellow tees) – Stableford

A-Flight

1st Gerry Cooney (17) 41pts

2nd Tony Berry (15) 36pts

3rd Robert Catlow (15) 32pts

B-Flight

1st P.J. Redmond (28s) 40pts

2nd Frank Quinlan (29) 37pts

3rd Phil Moore (18) 35pts

Near Pins: Keith Norman, Duncan Lee, Alex Kilcoyne, David McCormack

Compared to other tracks in the area, KK looked like a lush tropical garden, with rich green fairways, flowering shrubs and trees, and sparkling emerald greens running fast and true.  It was a truly pleasant afternoon at a lovely golf course.

Win and place positions in both flights were taken by players exceeding or equaling their handicaps: Gerry Cooney leading the way with an excellent 41 points.

A rare appearance by an ‘old time’ Bunker Boy – Drunkin Duncan – resulted in the poor lad being beaten out on count back for third place in A-Flight by Robert Catlow.  Duncan could have sealed the deal by making his three-foot par putt on the 18th, but it wasn’t to be.
