PSC Golf from The Golf Club

Monday, Oct. 6, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Jeff Cordeiro (6) 37pts

2nd Wilf Latham (12) 36pts

3rd Bob Newell (7) 33pts

The comp today was made of 5 groups in spite of the threatening rains on the horizon.  It seems that we are getting September’s weather now in October, as the rain has become an almost daily occurrence.  During these months our standard procedure is to play ‘lift, clean and place’ so as not to give an advantage to those earlier groups and that we all play off a level playing field.

It turned out to be pretty warm as the clouds dissipated and we had little protection from the scorching sun.  At least with a buggy you get that blast of a breeze between shots that makes all the difference.  I don’t know how you walkers do it all day.

Good to see some old faces (I mean that in the nicest possible way) out there today as we had appearances from former TGC Golf Director Bob Newell out with us.  We don’t see much of Bob as he stays close to The Players Lounge which is a whopping 7.8 kilometers from TGC.  I just had to measure it as we went out there for a lovely Sunday roast they are doing with Jameson’s now.

Young (compared to me anyway) Jeff Cordeiro was back in town and had a real good day of golf with a strong 20 on the back to take all the handsome man vouchers from us.  His 37 points was the best of the day and the only man to better his handicap.  Well done Jeffy!

It was nice to have a very interesting chat with a new face in the form of Wilf Latham joining us.  Wilf had been coming to Pattaya for 40 years and has some great stories of this place when it really was a sleepy little fishing village.  The golf scene back in those days was very limited and pretty much every man for himself.  Siam was the course of choice (but very basic back then) as it took a baht bus ride to get you out there.  This was long before the PSC or IPGC and a bar called Caesars down on Beach Road was the golf bar of choice in those days.  I wish Wilf had shot some photos from back then!  His solid 36 gave him 2nd place honours today.  Hope to see you out with us again mate.

But back to Bob and well, well, well… if he didn’t just sneak in with 33 points to take third and the final spot in the winner’s circle to do The Players Lounge proud!

Friday, Oct. 10, Greenwood C & A (white tees)– Stableford

T1st Tommy Sullivan (18) 29pts

T1st Steve Ellison (18) 29pts

3rd Ray Powell (15) 27pts

I have not been to Greenwood in ages so it was good to be back to this really lovely golf course.  We were assigned the C & A tracks but in my opinion, all 3 of the nine’s are just fine and all have some beautiful and memorable holes.  It was wet in the fairways so carts on the path only made it a tough slog for some of us.  One disappointment was the closure of the first drinks stand on the C side but my smiling caddy Keng shared her grapes with me and got me hydrated until the next one.

We had the Okinawa Boyz joining us today and these American expats often get down to Pattaya for a little R&R.  One of them, Tommy Sullivan, was playing with borrowed clubs from Nate but worked out well as he and I tied for 1st with 29 points.  We also welcomed back one of England’s finest, Mr. Ray Powell, and his 27 was enough to grab 3rd place today.

Thanks again to all who joined us for another great week of golf in Pattaya.
