Sunday, May 8, Green Valley – Monthly Medal

A Flight

1st JP Maffray (11) net 71

2nd Steve Newland (13) net 74

3rd Derek DeVries (9) net 75

B Flight

1st Daren Muddle (17) net 69

2nd Bob Christie (18) net 75

3rd Peter Henshaw (21) net 75

As is so often the case, a player’s vacation ends just as he finds his form and Daren ‘the thunder from down under’ Muddle experienced just that.  Daren won the monthly medal for May 2015 with an impressive net 69 as he topped B Flight and the field.  The victory qualifies Daren for the gold medal held after the December winner is decided.  He collected a lead crystal cut glass whiskey goblet and a bottle off Jameson’s Irish whiskey.

Every medal/stroke competition is replete with sad stories of ‘what could have been’ – but none sadder than Jorn Finnerup’s tale after he played the game as stableford and picked up on a hole rather than play it out, so his net 69 had to be disqualified.

The miner B Flight places went to a count back between Bob Christie and Irishman Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw, both tied on a net 75.  There was no luck of the Irish this time however as the scales’ of justice tipped in Bob’s favour.

A Flight was the domain of pay-window specialist JP Maffray with a solid a net 71.  JP was three clear of Steve Newlan while Peter LeNoury and Derek Devries had to be separated by a count back as Peter edged Derek off the podium, both with net75 returns.

JP Maffray, Tracy Brown, Matt Doyle and Jim Bell shared the 2’s pot.

After the presentation Daren kindly shared his bottle of whiskey with his new friends and so a great day ended with a great night at Lewiinski’s as everyone wished Daren and Tracy a safe return to Brisbane Australia.

Tuesday, May 12, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

1st Paul Danieiz (10) 34pts

2nd Rod Brown (16) 34pts

3rd Aki Yamamoto (21) 33pts

4th Peter Henshaw (21) 33pts

Mountain Shadow was the venue and the lads and lasses found the course, being in a very wet state, a tough challenge as the scores would indicate.

Paul Danieiz and Rod Brown were co-men of the match with 34 points each but Paul came out on top in the resulting count back.  Third and fourth places were also sorted out on count back between Aki Yamamoto and Ireland’s Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw, both a shot in arrears; Peter suffering his second count back loss in as many games.

Thursday, May 14, St. Andrews – Stableford

1st Steve Newlan (13) 39pts

2nd Paddy Jordan 37pts

3rd JP Maffray 36pts

Steve Newlan, second on Sunday, took no chances and no prisoners this time with an excellent 39 points for the win.  That was two more than Irishman Paddy Jordan in second while JP Maffray continued to play effectively despite an ever decreasing handicap to close the flight with a solid even par round.

Friday, May 15, Phoenix (Mountain & Ocean) – Stableford

1st Paul Danielz (10) 40pts

2nd Tracey Brown (7) 38pts

3rd Paul Bray (10) 37pts

4th Jim Elphick (25) 36pts

5th Yves Moutier (14) 36pts

In an effort to show that Tuesday’s win at Mountain Shadow was not a fluke, but rather a trend, Paul Danielz followed up with a man of the match 40 points.  Paul was followed up the podium steps by the toast of the bar, Tracy Brown, with a fine 38 points while Paul Bray took the third podium spot on 37.

A trio of golfers vied for the last two remaining podium places, all shooting even par rounds.  Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick emerged from the heap to claim the fourth spot, followed by Yves Moutier.  The title boy Daren ‘the thunder from down under’ Muddle was left at sea-level and potless.
