PAGS July Monthly Golf Tournament
Clear skies and a light breeze met the players on their arrival at Green Valley to play in July’s PAGS Tournament on Wednesday 30th. The golf course was in good shape, despite following a different flow of holes again, as the management seem to search for the most customer friendly set-up.
This was the 7th PAGS tournament of the year and saw a good field of 90 odd players test their skills in an effort to move up the Order of Merit for the end of year prizes, to go with the great variety of prizes on offer for the day. There were some outstanding scores here today, with the Ladies & C Flight showing the way with several 40+ point returns.

Once again with the numerous sponsors offering technical prizes on every hole, as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each of the 3 Men’s flights and 1st & 2nd available to the Ladies that teed it up on this day meant there were plenty of chances to take home a little something.
There were only 3 players that picked up the maximum of 2 technicals this month; Mika Vijakalken picked up both the under-55 Long Drives, Donal McGuigan a Long Drive and an approach in the 55-64 age group, while Nick Omarel picked up 2 approaches. PAGS policy of each player winning a maximum of 2 technical prizes means any excesses go into the “lucky draws”, and although there were no excessive winners today there were still plenty of lucky draws to be won. With only a few double ups this month it meant that the prizes were shared around amongst many well satisfied players.
Declan Kelly (H/cap 13) was this month’s A Flight winner with a solid 38 points, ahead of Shaun Merriman and Gerd Riedler, both with 37. Mika Viljakalken also had 37 points but was eliminated on count back after 18 on the Back 9, while Shaun & Gerd both had 20, before Shaun got the nod on the last six, 13 to Gerd’s 12.

B Flight required a count back to decide the winner after Christer Silvandersson (14) and Mihail Iordache (17) both signed for 37 points; Christer prevailing 19/18, while Leo Ruukanen (16) got the remaining podium spot with 36 points after a back nine of 19, to edge Patrice Bardy & Dennis Steele with 18 & 15 respectively.
The C Flight was hotly contested with some hot scores to go with it. Thiery Temime (28) led the way with 45 points, while another good score, this time by Terrence Marney (26) with 40 points got second spot ahead of Henry Wong (21) with a respectable 39 points.
The Ladies flight also required a count back after both Noi Emmerson (18) and Yui Bietry (14) recorded good scores of 40 points each. Both players had 19 on the back nine, with Noi having 14 on the last six to edge Yui with 13.
Congratulations also go to Low Gross winner this month, Mike Allidi, who went around in a creditable 75.
PAGS continues to enjoy great support, with the free BBQ at Shenanigans becoming a fine social event in its own right, and family and friends all come along to support the players. Again on this evening there was plenty of good cheer and well wishes for the participants after another most enjoyable tournament, and all look forward to August’s event at Treasure Hill on 27th.
