The Haven Golf Society
Monday, August 28, Greenwood B & C – Stableford
CSS 75
1st Mike Dabanovich (12) 37pts
2nd Andrew Purdie (6) 33pts
3rd Shuichi Kodaka (19) 32pts
4th Darryl Burkett (11) 31pts
5th Mark Cooper (11) 31pts
6th Jon Batty (6) 30pts
Although the course was in good condition generally there was little run on the fairways as once again the overnight rain had left it extremely damp, which saw the CSS for the day move out an additional stroke.
The winner on the day was Mike Dabanovich whose long hitting was complimented by an improvement to his short game which saw him go four strokes clear to take the day’s top honour.
Andrew Purdie, another of the long hitters, followed the winner in after he started out well but then faded through the closing holes and had to settle for a good second on the day.
Shuichi Kodaka was a close third just one behind and one ahead of a count back for fourth and fifth that was won by Darryl Burkett over Mark Cooper as he carded a better 15 to 14 through the C nine. That left Jon Batty in the last mentioned position another shot back in sixth place.
There were no 2s in the second division but Jon Batty slipped in the sole one in the first division to sweep the pot.
Wednesday, August 30, Pattana B & C – Stableford
CSS 74
1st Murray Edwards (19) 33pts
2nd Brian Proctor (16) 32pts
3rd Ray Smallwood (25) 32pts
4th Peter Skinner (10) 29pts
5th Markku Tynell (22) 28pts
Another very wet course but also in pristine condition was the second test of the week at Pattana where the B and C courses were in play and the ninth hole on the B course was being played again as a reachable par six, to make a par of 73 for the day. With the rough playing extremely rough it was no surprise to find that again the CSS had gone up, this time a stroke, to 74 as only two players had made the standard.
The best of these was Murray Edwards who led in the field with a very solid three-over round in the conditions with just a single zero on the card and four 3-pointers.
Brian Proctor had his best round of his first trip to Pattaya after he won a count back over Ray Smallwood, finishing with a better 14 to 12 over the last nine holes.
Peter Skinner took fourth place another three shots adrift and one ahead of fifth placed Markku Tynell.
There were no 2s in the first division but Ray Smallwood made up for his disappointment in the count back with a very nice one on the 140-yard B3.
Friday, Sept. 1, Phoenix (Lake & Ocean) – Stableford
CSS 71
1st Murray Frost (28) 42pts
2nd Shuichi Kodaka (19) 39pts
3rd Andrew Purdie (6) 39pts
4th Mark Cooper (11) 37pts
5th Jon Batty (6) 35pts
6th Allan Pilkington (7) 35pts
At last the group played a course that in comparison with the previous two was very benign, with even the rough seemly not up to its usual standard of severity. Playing within the standard for the day was not a problem for the majority of the field and the CSS for the day was reduced to 71.
The best of the day was a truly outstanding round from visiting “Celebrity Chef” Murray Frost who at last put in a card that did not resemble a dog’s dinner but was indeed remarkable, with the back-nine at five over par being by far his best nine ever achieved. It was also his best result of the current trip by 12 strokes and locked up his first win with the group.
Shuichi Kodaka then won a count back over Andrew Purdie with a better 21 to 20 for second place, leaving Andrew a little bemused, having shot a gross 75 to finish third.
Mark Cooper took fourth place and finished just ahead of a count back for fifth and sixth between Jon Batty and Allan Pilkington, which the former won with a better 19 to 17.
There were no 2s in the second division but Peter Skinner cleaned out the first division pool with two, one on the 2nd on Lake and even better effort on the 7th on Ocean.
