The Tropical Golf Group
Tuesday, August 29, Greenwood – Stroke
At the end of every month we play a stroke-play competition for the monthly mug and also announce the winner of the golfer of the month competition.
We were told that there were no carts allowed on the course and the wet layout meant a quick change of plans and we switched to playing off the yellow tees instead of the whites.
The test for the day was to be the B & C nines and the fairways were ankle deep in water in places and a lot of finding a dry spot had to go on. The greens were not too bad, but slower than normal and the rough was difficult to get out of. Most tiring was the walk from the path to the ball as the caddies followed rules, however after a while the white flags came out for the carts in our group as they realised we were past our best.
Back at BJ’s it was soon into the results as we had quite a few. The winner of the monthly mug was Brian Gabe with a fine net 71 while in second was Tom Herrington with a net 72 on a count back over Brian Parish in third. Taking fourth place was John Davies with a net 73 and then a count back on net 74 saw Daryl Evans in fifth and Dick Warberg and Barry Elphick just missing out.
The recipient of the golfer of the month award was John Davis who at the end won quite comfortably from his nearest rivals.
Friday, Sept. 1, Treasure Hill – Stableford
The opening September salvo was to take place at Treasure Hill. Fourteen golfers signed up to give this course a try, and a good many of them regretted it. Still, it was nice weather, cloudy but no rain, so off we went.
Treasure Hill has extended its 1050 baht special for all fees including a cart, so most if not all regular walkers signed up if for no other reason than to give the caddie a break. The bad news was it was carts on paths only most of the way, so sometimes caddie and golfer had to cover more ground than if they had elected to walk.
Sometimes you fight the course and the course wins. One golfer however just ignored the difficult layout and went about his business in a professional manner. That was Steve Truelove (c/h 10) who used his long hitting to sail over most hazards and earn an excellent 38 points, five shots clear of the pack! Next came a covey of “33’s” and even with the next three winners tied at that score some others lost out on count back. The ever present Mashi Kaneta (17), Barry Elphick (27) and Brian Parish (12) all took a bow on the podium.
The best half rounds for non-winners came from Nigel Perry and John Sykes.
