Monday, Feb. 13, Crystal Bay – Stableford

A public holiday here today but our normal rate remained the same and we were playing the C and B nines.  The marshalls still have no idea when the A course will reopen after the renovation.

There were ten groups out in three divisions with the cut set at 8-14, 15-19 and 20+.  The best score of the day came in division 2 from Bruce Gardner who won with 39 points.  Paul Butler took second on 37 and Keith Woolley beat Jerry McCarthy on a 15/14 back-nine count back after they both came in with 34 points each.

David Phillips, Mike Lewis and Raivo Velsberg.

In division 1, 38 points won it for Sid Crawley with Brian Keating in second one point behind and Bob Comartin taking third with 35.

Robert Angell was the winner in division three with 36 points, Jim Connelly placed second on 34 and Magne Gunnarson was third after beating Rick Assi 20/13 on the back-nine, both coming in with 33 points.

Near pins went to (Div 1) Dennis Scougall, Sid Crawley and Keith Woolley (2), and (Div 2) Bert Jumelet, Ger Lodge and Finn Olsen.

Sid Crawley birdied B4 and Dennis Scougall C4 to split the ‘2’s pot in division 1 and Rick Assi and Finn Olsen both birdied C7 to share the division 2 spoils.

Wednesday, Feb. 15, The Emerald – Stableford

There were 29 players out today so three short of three divisions and the equal cut came at 8-18 and 19+ in division 2.  We had heard some negative comments regarding the condition of this course prior to playing today but there were no major moans from our group after they all came back in.

The Welsh boy David Phillips topped division 2 with 38 points and the Vanuata ferry captain Peter Davies was second with 34.  Jim Connelly completed the podium in third with 33 points.

There was another Welshman on the podium in division 1, Mike Lewis beating Raivo Velsberg 13/11 on a back-six count back after they both came in with 35 points overall.  Per Forsberg picked up the scraps in third with 32.

Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Paul Butler, Mike Lewis, Raivo Velsberg and Niels Viuff, and (Div 2) Magne Gunnarson, Jerry McCarthy, David Phillips and Andres Van De Laan.

There were no ‘2’’s in either division so rollovers to Pattavia.

There was some sad news today, Leo Adam lost his first ball in the bushes on the 15th and his next tee shot on the par three went straight into the hole!  Nobody likes to see that.

Friday, Feb. 17, Eastern Star – Stableford

Hopefully our last week here with the Korean golf groups out in front of us, but we took two and quarter hours on the front nine and one and three quarters on the back, so not really a problem.  However, out of our eleven groups today the first five came in within an 80 minute gap, food for thought boys!

An equal cut today in three divisions of 6-15.9, 16.1-21 and 22+ and Tony Thorne won division 2 with 38 points as Harry Vincenzi claimed second place one point behind and Frank Kelly took third with 36.

Peter Davies beat Josef Kemplfe 22/15 on the back-nine in division 3 after they both scored 38 points and John Kelly placed third with 34.

In the premier division, the social workers boss, Dennis Scougall, won the day with 36 points, one ahead of Paul Butler in second on 33 and Steve Richardson completed the podium with 28 points is third, beating John Hughes and Jerry Sweetnam on a 17/14/13 back-nine count back.

There were no rollovers in the ‘2’s in either division but John Hughes and his better half Dawn were smiling at the presentation at Frasers after his birdie on the 3rd today.
