Monday, July 20, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

It was time for our monthly visit to the challenging Mountain Shadow Golf Course and there were 4 groups signed up to play.  The few drops of rain on the way there didn’t worry us as we were confident it would clear up and sure enough after a couple of holes it was fine.

We had a late start scheduled for reasons only known to Mountain Shadow but it meant a sleep in for most and as we arrived at the course early we were able to send our first group away 20 minutes early at 11.00am.  The weather was good and the course in good “nick” with some of the greens very slick, so keep it below the hole was the preferred option.  The pace of play was quite good considering another golf society was directly ahead of our groups and most of our rounds were finished in a little over four hours.

Gerd Riedler had a return to form and his 40 points was the best score of the day, with Wan Makmul once again finding herself on the podium by finishing second with 38.  With 2 golfers on 37 points a count back was required which resulted in Larry Gibb (21 point back nine) finishing third from Christian Boysen (18 point back nine) in fourth place, and your writer, Peter Blackburn, sneaked into fifth spot with a steady 36 points.

Friday, July 24, Plutaluang N & W – Stableford

We headed south down Sukhumvit on a fine and sunny Friday morning and we had a very good turnout with 5 groups on the starting sheet for Plutaluang.

After checking in we headed down to the starter’s hut where we were told that with the East nine closed it was to be the North & West nines, which meant everyone that played must take a cart.  This caused some rearranging to be done as we had several “walkers” and as we were unaware of this beforehand I would advise anyone playing at Plutaluang to clarify the situation before heading out there.

Our first group got away on time at 10.00am and in fine weather with a nice cooling breeze they proceeded at a good pace but after the North 9 we encountered the usual – a Thai five-ball who had been put in the middle of our field – TIT!  This slowed things down somewhat and our later groups ended up with a four & a half hour round.  Regardless of that it was an enjoyable day with the course in fine shape and the greens were excellent but some of the fairways were very hard.

Welshman Phil Davies once again took the honours and was the winner with 37 points while veteran Ken Hole came second with 35.  A count back was needed to separate third & fourth as there were 2 golfers on 33 points and it was your writer, Peter Blackburn (18 point back nine) who grabbed third spot from Wan Makmul (16 point back nine) in fourth place and Dave Edwards finished fifth with 32.

1st Phil Davies (15) 37pts

2nd Ken Hole (18) 35pts

3rd Peter Blackburn (15) 33pts

4th Wan Makmul (33) 33pts

5th Dave Edwards (10) 32pts
