PSC golf from The Growling Swan

Monday, May 19, Eastern Star – Stableford

There was a healthy field of 21 signed up for the first game of the week and we gathered at The Growling Swan prior to our departure to the Eastern Star Golf Course.

We welcomed Jerry Dobbs, back for a couple of weeks from his work in Gladstone, Queensland and also Kurt-Eric Persson & his lady Seesa back for another game with us.  Once again it was time to say goodbye to David “Fletch” Fletcher who will shortly be returning to work in Western Australia.

All were early so we left the GS 5 minutes ahead of schedule at 8.25 am and arrived at the course 45 minutes later.  It was fairly quiet so we had time to relax and prepare and our first four-ball teed off 15 minutes before our allotted time of 10.00 am.

It was a lovely day, not too hot with a gentle breeze and the golf course was in very good “nick” with the greens receptive and true.  We set a fairly good pace and as the breeze got a bit stronger it made playing conditions quite comfortable and we completed our very enjoyable round in four hours & fifteen minutes.

Playing some excellent golf recently was one of my playing partners, Gerd Riedler, and his fine 41 points was good enough for first place in A Division, with Kevin “Wayco” Waycott hot on his heels in second place on 40 points and Takeshi Hakozaki taking third with 39.

Division B was won by Seesa Phompinmon who had 35 points and Dick “The Reverend” Braimbridge came second just one point further back.  There were 2 golfers with 33 points and the count back resulted in third place going to Gary Williams (18 point back nine) with Nolan “Notso” Wise (16 point back nine) just missing out.

The Growling Swan NAGA Award for the lowest score on the day went to Niall Stuart

Thursday, May 22, Burapha – 4-Person Scramble

It was the time for our monthly “novelty” game and the format this time was a 4 person scramble with a random draw, matching 2 low handicappers & 2 high handicappers together in each group.  We had 20 golfers eager to participate which was perfect as it gave us 5 teams and we assembled at The Growling Swan in readiness for our departure to the classy Burapha Golf & Country Club.

We welcomed Rosco Langoulant and also Andrew Purdie, formerly from Queensland but now a Pattaya Resident.  Leaving the GS 5 minutes early at 8.25 am we arrived at the course 35 minutes later and had plenty of time to do the random draw and have a chip and a putt.

B & D nines was the designated combination on the day and we got our first group away in lovely weather conditions with a gentle breeze.  The golf course was, as usual, in perfect condition with lush fairways and magnificently prepared greens and with only light “traffic” ahead of us we were able to maintain a steady pace and as is expected with a 4 person scramble we completed the round in just a couple of minutes over four hours.  It had been an excellent day with very good company.

As it was a 4 person scramble with just 5 teams competing there were awards for first & second placed teams.  There were also rewards for nearest the pin on the four par 3’s and longest first putts on the A9 & C9 greens.

The winning team was Rosco Langoulant, John Davis, Andrew Allen & Dick Brainbridge with a net score of 60.5 and the runners up were Andrew Purdie, Bill Steinman, Peter Grey & Jerry Dobbs with a net score of 61.2.
