Garden International School’s (GIS) team of nine boys and six girls struck gold at the recently held U13 FOBISSEA Games 2013.

On the first day of the Games, hosted by Bangkok Prep International School from March 15-17, the students competed in the swimming competition in the morning.  All performed exceptionally well and collected 21 medals in the pool.  For the afternoon session the athletes moved over to the athletic stadium for the track and field events.  The event was unfortunately cut short by the weather, however, the GIS students claimed eight medals.  If it wasn’t for the rain the tally could have been double.

On the second day the girls took to the football field and the boys to the basketball court.  With only six girls in the squad, GIS joined forces with Kinabalu International School (as the competition was seven-a-side and subs were needed) to make the GKIS football team.  Losing only one game in the pool section took GKIS into the final to play St Andrews in what was a classic game.  Taking a 1-0 lead into the second half, the girls played their hearts and took the gold medal.

The boys at the basketball tournament played very well and finished a creditable fourth.  With the students tired from the second day, the girls then moved to the basketball court and the boys to the football field.  Again the girls joined forces with KIS, combining to become GKIS.  Throughout the tournament the girls played great basketball and finished in second place.

The boys were superb throughout the tournament and scored 24 goals in the pool games without conceding any goals.  In the final they met KIS and won 6-1 to take the gold medal.

A number of coaches commented on the boys standard of play, which was fantastic, and also about how they conducted themselves throughout with their sportsmanship towards the other teams.

The students were exhausted after their great efforts, but were greatly satisfied with their accomplishments over the three days of competition.
