Phoenix Members Golf Society
Firstly, on behalf of all members of our group, we wish everyone a happy, and more importantly, a healthy New Year.
Our first game of 2013 was actually on the 1st (New Year’s Day) but not many remember much about it so there’s no point in me trying either. I do know that the Relax Bar staff were having a well earned rest so we managed to find another bar open who took good care of us.
So, our first proper winner of the year was the boy from “Open All Hours” fame, Granville Swanton on Friday, Jan. 4. I have to say, Granville takes all the joking very well and he even brings most players a banana every Friday. We don’t play golf very well but you should see us all swinging from tree to tree.
Winners from the outing on Tuesday, Jan. 8 pose for a group photo.
A superb 40 points to kick off the new year was Granville’s score, with Francis Goyons 3 shots behind with 37 points and claiming third place was Peter Harris with 36.
Near pin prizes went to Peter Harris, Granville Swanton and Keith Etherington (nearly a hole in one). The fourth par three near pin was not claimed by anyone so that prize went to the lucky draw.
Recipients of the lucky draw (donated by the Relax Bar) were Wolfram Krueger, Mike Gerrard, Jonathan Fortis, with two new guests, both name Ulf, being awarded consolation lucky draw prizes.
The first full Tuesday outing was on Jan. 8 and as you can see by the photo there was a good result for a few of the Italian members. Can’t keep em out of a photo!
The A Flight winner was Jim Neilson with 37 points. This win was but a matter of time as his handicap has been creeping up slowly and we all know any player worth his salt will play eventually. Well done Jim.
Granville Swanton (2nd left) celebrates his win with the staff at The Relax Bar.
In second place with 34 points was Richard Baldwin, pushing Joe Miller into third place by way of a better back nine.
B Flight winner was Peter Harris with 36 points, with Joris Goetschalckx in second place with 35 and Adriano Reale claiming third spot with 32 points. This was welcomed by all because it was the first time Adriano had managed to finish in a podium place since he has been playing with us.
Due to his success today we blamed Adriano for forgetting to pick up the near pin flags in his excitement. However we managed to work it out with the help of honest players and the results were as follows: – Pellis Johnston, Bob (The Boston Burglar) Neylon, Richard Baldwin & Jim Neilson.
Our lucky draw winners today were Sergio Volpi, Harvey Trewarn, John Bartley & Sergio Poggi.
Our group consists mainly of Phoenix Golf Club members, but we do welcome visitors as guests with a concessionary green fee of only 1.000 Baht plus caddy and cart if required. However, we do limit our golf playing guests to male only and they must have an official handicap of not more than 28.
On Tuesday, Jan. 22, we are holding our annual New Year Drive In competition. We shall have a party after at the Relax Bar. The golf entrance fee is 250 Baht per player and the buffet is 350 per person. All proceeds from the raffle/lucky draw will go towards both the staff of the Relax Bar and the Phoenix caddies and staff annual party. We feel they are the people who have looked after our interests all year. There are a few spaces available if anyone would like to join.
We also organise weekly sea fishing trips which are quite full at this time of the year but if anyone is interested in either golf or fishing, please call me (Mike) on 087 091 7565 for further information.
