PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar

Monday, May 21, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

What started out as a beautiful day for golf turned very wet and we sheltered in one of the huts around the course along with the ground staff while it poured down. After an hour or so we were back on the course in hot but mostly dry conditions.

With only 3 groups today we got away to a later than normal start on a course in great condition and even after the downpour it drained the water off in about 15 minutes. It did make the greens a little more receptive also.

The scores were good with 37 points from Miss Sasicha taking third place while Capt Bob had a day in the sun, scoring 38 points but being beaten by Paul Greenaway who signed for 39.

There were no ‘2’s recorded.

Wednesday, May 23, Green Valley – Stableford

It seems that Green Valley is constantly making changes to the course and it is always interesting to see the next improvement on their schedule. The new, impressive entrance has, unfortunately, come to a full stop but the fairways have been repaired, the water areas have been cleared of many trees and now most of the greens staff are employed on cosmetic tasks clearing large areas that have, hitherto, been ignored.

In the ladies competition, Miss Lynn should have had a better result for after 6 holes she had 14 points but she then hit a few pot holes and finished with 35 points, three behind Miss Yen who started each half with 1 point but lost out to Miss Prae for second place on count-back. But it was difficult to compete with Miss Porn who had a really consistent round with 21 on the front and 20 on the way home to win the day.

Peter Thomas had an uphill battle today after scoring only 1 point on the first three holes but then moved into top gear with 22 points on the back nine for 35 points. Lloyd Shuttleworth is proving the man to beat with consistent scores off his 3 handicap and his 36 points took third place. Selwyn Wegner did not think he was playing well today but still claimed second place with 37 points, but the runaway winner was Brendon Cope with 44.

Three 2s all went to the ladies today, namely Miss Porn and Miss Nu who had 2 of them.

Friday, May 25, Phoenix Gold – Scramble

The monthly scramble was held at Phoenix with nine groups participating and we got away to an early start in perfect conditions for golf. The course was in grand shape and even though there were no carts allowed off the carts paths it didn’t seem to make too much difference to the older golfers that can’t walk to far.

As always at Phoenix there was no group taking the course apart today and this was the third month in row that only two teams scored below 60 net. We played the Mountain and Lakes layouts, with Mountain being one of the hardest nine holes of golf you will find anywhere in this area with its brutal rough to make it even tougher.

Brian Farino’s team took third place today with a net 61.1 on a count-back over the Courtyard Cavaliers. Second place went to the defending champions, Paul Greenaway, Andy Butterworth, Bill Marsden and Capt Bob with a score of net 57.1. The team of Fergus Brennan, Peter Seil, Poopay and Nick Shaw took the top spot with fine score of 56.8, including an eagle on the 18th that secured the win.

The June scramble will be held at Plutaluang as Phoenix will be closed for the Kings Cup.
