IPGC Golf from The Haven
Monday, June 19, Treasure Hill (yellow tees) – Stableford
CSS 75 NC
1st Tom Shea (5) 30pts
2nd John Tallett (26) 29pts
3rd Tomas Nilsson (12) 29pts
4th Dave LeHane (18) 29pts
5th Murray Edwards (20) 29pts
6th Markku Tynell (21) 29pts
The course was in fairly good condition considering the continuing maintenance, which included the spiked greens that were unusually slow, but one thing that cannot be decried are the prices which at 1,050 baht including a cart and caddy are by far the best in the area. If only the course was not quite so difficult to score from it would surely be inundated with players.
The difficulty of the course was underlined when the CSS for the day went out to 75 with the best score of the day being six over handicap. Tom Shea was that player, taking his first win with the group and was very surprised after scoring 40 points the previous day and not winning.
John Tallett then led in a multi-count back between five with the best over the last nine of 17 for second place and Tomas Nilsson third with 16. Then Dave LeHane won a count back over the last six with a better 10 to 9 to leave Murray Edwards in fifth, with Markku Tynell last of the five in sixth having just 13.
Dave Edwards cleaned out the first division 2s pool at last and John Tallett did the same in the second division with their solo efforts.
Wednesday, June 21, Pattana B & C – Stableford
CSS 74
1st Mike Hill (21) 36pts
2nd Tomas Nilsson (12) 31pts
3rd Larry Gibb (22) 31pts
4th Toby Glass (11) 31pts
5th Tom Shea (5) 30pts
6th Ray Smallwood (24) 30pts
A slightly easier challenge for the hopefuls when B and C from the yellow tees was the day’s scheduled event, but the CSS again went up to 74 with the 9th on B being played as a par five for a change.
The course was in superb shape following the recent heavy weather and again was a testament to the commitment of the management to always keep it in pristine condition.
Mike Hill was the leader by a clear five strokes after returning his best card for a couple of months and one without the blemish of a zero.
Tomas Nilsson won a count back for second over Larry Gibb after returning a better 18 to 16, but it must be recorded that Larry is contending much better now he is concentrating on the other 14 holes as well as the par 3s. Toby Glass was also involved in that count back and took fourth after scoring 13. He was followed by yet another count back between Tom Shea and Ray Smallwood which Tom won with a better 11 to 9 over the back six after they had tied the nine with 15 each.
There were no 2s in the second division but Tomas Nilsson took the first division pot with the sole one in the first division.
Friday, June 23, Pattaya C.C. – Monthly Medal
CSS 72
Division 1 (0–15)
1st Gus Guidetti (12) net 68
Division 2 (16+)
1st Phil Cass (18) net 72
2nd Mike Hill (21) net 75
3rd John Tallett (26) net 75
The course was in good condition following heavy overnight rain, which had mostly disappeared by the start. Once again there was a distinct lack of other golfers as had been the case on the two previous occasions in the week, underlining the desperate situation of tourists to the area at the present time.
Unfortunately there was only one entrant in the first division but that did not mean that he took it easy as Gus Guidetti returned a net four under following a gross 80 off his 12 handicap. Gus had just returned from a big open competition in Hua Hin where he had placed second overall in his division after four days of tough golf.
The second division was led in by Phil Cass with a level handicap return that was enough to win by three ahead of a count back for the second qualifying entry into the end of year Gold and Silver Medals, which was won by the in-form Mike Hill with a better 33.5 to 38. That left John Tallett back in third but not too disappointed as he was already a qualifier.
RIP “Muffy” Kerr
It is with great regret we have to advise the passing of one of the founding members of the group and a stalwart of the annual Jackalope Charity golf event. Murray Kerr, known throughout the community as ‘Muffy’, died following a tragic motorcycle accident on June 23. He will be sorely missed for his kindness, humour, charity and great fellowship by all those who ever came into contact with him. Our thoughts are very much for his wife Mamoo and sons Jason and Ty.
