PSC Golf from The Golf Club

Monday, Nov. 9, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Kevin Hamilton (17) 43pts

2nd Alan Rothwell (7) 40pts

T3rd David Rose (3) 37pts

T3rd Kenny Aihara (3) 37pts

Here we go again, but this time with the threat of rain all about which is unusual for mid November.  We had this happen last year and it may be the trend that we have a later than normal rainy season.  Like Mark Twain said, “Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it.”

A full mob of 28 golfers were ready for today’s comp at Green Valley.  One was much luckier than the others but we will get to that later.  Working our way up the totem pole, it was a tie for third at 37 points with both David Rose and Ken Aihara, playing off 3, sharing the podium spot.

I must take this opportunity to thank David Rose for the Masters flag he presented to us and signed by none other than Arnold Palmer and addressed to The Golf Club!  It’s easy to remember Mr. Palmer’s victories at the Masters as it was every other year from ’58, ’60, ’62 and 1964.  We are honoured to have this treasured flag on the walls of The Club.  Dave knows Mr. Palmer quite well as he was the Head Golf Professional at the Arnold Palmer Bay Hill Resort in Orlando.  Thanks so much Dave.

Now back to the scoring and we found Alan Rothwell carding a 40-pointer that on any other day would have given him the win.  But today it was 3 shots short as Kev Hamilton was firing on all cylinders and with a bit of luck and the rub of the green he scored a fantastic 43 points for the win.

Friday, Nov. 13, Bangpra (white tees) – Stableford

T1st David Rose (3) 36pts

T1st Jim Dundon (17) 36pts

3rd Alan Rothwell (8) 34pts

Friday the thirteenth!  It turns out that it was scarier than the boys bargained for as some serious rain and even more serious lightening got closer than we have ever experienced.  It started out fairly benign and the trip out to Bangpra pretty innocuous.  The course was in great condition but with slow greens – can you believe it at Bangpra?  Of course we had the usual simian antics but at the turn, the heavens opened and most took fortunate shelter at the drinks stand to wait it out.

Kam, Jimmy Dundon and Jim Kurzava with Fred Birch on the 11th at Bangpra.

Then the lightening started and we counted… flash… 8 seconds… flash… 6 seconds… flash… no seconds!  It seemed the strike was literally above our heads but all reported in safely.  Heading off to continue play and arriving at the 11th tee box, the large tree next to the white tees had been shorn in half by a lightning strike and if anyone had been underneath there is no telling what could have happened.

This bothered a few of the lads but not our podium finishers.  At third was the familiar name of Alan Rothwell turning in a 34 point card.  Two shots ahead we found a tie with Jimmy Dundon and David Rose sharing the win on 36 points each.  Nice to see they all finished with ten fingers and ten toes!
