PSC golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Monday, June 23, The Emerald – Stableford

The Emerald golf course was the outing today and it is in great condition at the moment, with fast greens and most of the fairways back to normal after the work that was done to get rid of the blade grass.

We were joined today by a young man of 71 years playing off a 1 handicap, but unfortunately on each six he was let down by his playing partners and had to shell out at the end for all three sixes.  It was a grand day for golf no rain but heavy cloud cover to keep a lot of the heat out.

There were some good scores coming in with a count back on 38 for second and third, which Greg Hill edged over Phil Waite.  Taking first place was Bob Philp with his best score for a long time of 39 points.

There was only one ‘2’ coming from Lloyd Shuttleworth on the 7th.

Wednesday, June 25, Green Valley – Stableford

Arriving at Green Valley in pouring rain it was out to John and Geoff’s at the golf driving centre for a cup of coffee and to see what would become of the day – would it be a wash out or would the intrepid seven groups play?  After about 30 minutes it was decided to give it a go and the rain stayed away for the most part and it turned out to be a great day for golf.

We were joined today by Rosco’s good mates from Karratha, ‘Happy Feet’ and his wife Mrs Happy Feet (alias Monica), plus Noel and Andy from England who were heard to remark that the weather seemed fairly similar to what they had just left at home.  The course however had stood up well to the overnight rain and carts were allowed on the fairways, much to our surprise.

Friday winners: John, Sel, Eng and Cottie.

The day was our monthly tournament sponsored by Brian Chapman from the DeVere Group.  The winner of the trophy was Kevin Hamilton with a great 40 points, one ahead of John Player in second who garnered an amazing 24 points on the back nine, pity about the front-nine mate!  In third spot was Mal (if I can say it right ) Farquharson with 37 points, while fourth went to Sel Wegner on a count back over Kiwi Bill Marsden, both with 36.

There were four ‘2’s coming from Noi, Bill, Kev and Owen.

Friday, June 27, Plutaluang – Scramble

Playing Plutaluang in our monthly scramble today on the West and North loops we were met with ideal weather conditions, no rain but just a light cloud cover to keep out the heat.  The course was in great shape and as usual as tough as hell on these two nines.

The target was to beat the omnipresent Courtyard Cavaliers, and today that happened.  You could have thrown a tea towel over the scores with just 4 shots separating first to last.  It was all about handicap with one team starting on a 1 handicap and another off 10.5 but it was all down to the middle runners to take the plaudits today.

Coming in at number three was the team of Chris Dodd, Jim Grieve, Don Wilson and Mal Farquharson with a net score of 61.  Second place went to Bob Philp, Lloyd Shuttleworth, Bill Marsden and Phil Elliott with a net score of 60.6, but the winners were the team of Sel Wegner, John Player, Wayne Cotterell and Eng Cotterell, with a net score of 60.1.

It was a good day out for all concerned and all are looking forward to the next match.

Note:  There will be a party at the Billabong on July 5 for the second birthday party of the bar.  Karaoke, pig on a spit, and lots of fun so hope to see you there.

The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan.  Give Bob a call on 082 204 3411 if you are looking for a game of golf.
