Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, August 10, Phoenix – Stableford
The cut in the 2 divisions today was set at 9-14 and 15+ and the top flight Paul Butler beat Jerry Sweetnam 15/13 on a back six count back to take first place after both came in with 34 points each. Terry Madsen occupied third spot on the podium with 32 points after edging a count back over Colin Aspinall.
Near pins went to (Div 1) Dave Horne and Jerry sweetnam, and (Div 2) Gordon Everingham, Tom Murphy and Gary Simpson.
Paul Butler and Jerry Sweetnam both birdied Ocean 7 to share the ‘2’s pot while there was a rollover in division 2 till Wednesday.
Wednesday, August 12, Parichat – Stableford
Today was a public holiday and after a few phone calls to various courses we were offered a remarkable price for the day at Parichat. This was our first visit to this course since its opening and with two ex-Eastern Star ladies on the management committee there were no problems booking in.
(L to R) Jim Connelly, Tony Bless, Lars, Jerry Sweetnam and Glyn Evans.
Colin James, playing off 20, won division 2 (20+) with an even par 36 points ahead of Lars in second with 34 and Willy van Heetvelde took third with 32.
Tony Bless topped division 1 standings with 35 points while Terry Madsen took second two points behind and Jerry Sweetnam came third with 32.
The course here is still developing but the tees and fairways were very plush. We were going to play off the blue tees, as always one from the back, but were told there were many long carries over water for the higher handicapper so we chose the whites at 5380 yards.
There were many good comments after the round; the temporary clubhouse is acceptable but there is a lack of lockers in the men’s room. The restaurant is also acceptable with a good menu and fine food. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months with the construction of the other nine holes.
Near today went to (Div 1) Terry Madsen, Jerry Sweetnam (2) and Chris Voller, and (Div 2) Lars (2).
Tony Bless birdied the 6th and Terry Madsen and Jerry Sweetnam the 14th to split the ‘2’s pot in division 1 while Lars cleaned up the four rollovers in the second flight.
Friday, August 14, Eastern Star – Rainbow Stableford
This was another fun game courtesy of the rollover kitty – a rainbow stableford for three divisions with the cut set at 9-14, 15-20 and 21 plus in division 3. Each player had to select six red, six white and six blue tees to play from so it was a game of logic today.
Curtis Hessler recorded the best score of the day to win division 2 with 40 points. Tony Bless came in second just one point behind and Tony Thorne claimed third with 34.
Arthur Hancock’s 37 points won division 1, with Colin Aspinall second on 34 and Paul Butler in third one point behind Colin.
An amazing 36 points won division 3 for ‘the organizer’ while Jeff Greer was second with 32 and Jim Connelly beat Rod Howett 18/14 on the back nine for third after they both came in with 31 points each. It was great to see Rod back again after his bad knee disorder and on the first hole he hit a reasonable drive and then a scuttler to within three inches from the hole – three for five points, not a bad start!
Near pins were claimed by (Div 1) Colin Aspinall, Arthur Hancock, Jerry Sweetnam and Chris Voller, (Div 2) Tony Bless (2), Lars and Tony Thorne, and (Div 3) Peter Davies and Jim Connelly.
Paul Butler birdied the third and in division 2 Lars did likewise on the 13th, the signature hole, to record the only ‘2’s of the day.
