PSC Golf from The Golf Club

Monday, June 1, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Mathias Hermann (13) 43pts

2nd Bob Watson (5) 39pts

T3rd Billy Eyles (17) 35pts

T3rd David Deira (18) 35pts

Today was yet another public holiday, so there were a few less souls taking to the fairways of Green Valley for this competition.  Never mind, we set off right on time at 08:15 to comfortably make our 09:28 first tee time.

We had another multinational podium with South Africa, England, Australia and Germany all finishing in the victory circle.  It’s good to welcome back some blokes who have not been back to Pattaya for a few years and catch up with their activities.  You never know who will show up on your doorstep sometimes.

Mark Haffenden.

It was also great to see our buddy Roachie, a European Tour caddie for Tyrell Hatton, get confirmation that they have qualified to play in The Open!  Tyrell had a great final day to get to a tie for 4th at the recent Irish Open, so good luck boys!

Green Valley continues to be in great condition and young Mathias ate it all up with the best round of his trip.  We don’t get many rounds in the forties so his 43 pointer was very special.  I would always be happy with a 39 at RGV as it is usually a big enough number for a win.  Bob Watson picked the wrong day to shoot it and ended up the bridesmaid today.  Dave and Billy finished sharing box number three, both at 35 Stableford points.

Tuesday, June 2, Laem Chabang A & C (white tees) – Stableford

1st Mark Haffenden (0) 38pts

2nd Andy Kellner (9) 36pts

3rd Walter Baechli (14) 34pts

Sports Day rates demanded we head back out to one of the best golf courses in Asia, the Jack Nicklaus designed Laem Chabang International.  In the past, this golf course has won many awards from the major golf magazines but has been somewhat overshadowed of late by Siam and Amata Spring.  The recent redevelopment of the clubhouse, pro shop, locker rooms and restaurant has brought this great track back to her former glory.  Condition of the course was superb.

Kenny Aihara, John Hutt and Peter Thomas après-golf at TGC.

Mark Haffenden is a buddy of ours we have seen go from a 4 handicap down now to playing off scratch.  Today he was just off the white tees so it probably seemed a walk in the park to shoot 2 under.  In my dreams!  Great shooting Mark, and Andy did well on 36, with Walter and his electric trousers a couple back on 34.

Thursday, June 4, Phoenix (white tees) – Stableford

1st John Hutt (23) 38pts

T2nd Peter Thomas (18) 37pts

T2nd Ken Aihara (3) 37pts

The best way to beat that Friday traffic jam is to play on Thursday.  Not that I was looking at my watch, but we had a great round right at the 4 hour mark and back at TGC by 2:30, fantastic!

Phoenix is really looking good these days and when the Lake 9 is finished it will be even better.  They are digging up all of the Lake course and rebuilding the tee boxes as well as all the greens, from what we saw here today.  It should all be pretty amazing in a few months time.

Yes, we played here the previous week for our Monthly Medal, and it was a full sign-up sheet.  This time was the same, which shows you what a popular venue this is.  Khun Nat has got the low season pricing right and most golf bars have been coming here on a regular basis.

This was a big deal for today’s winner as well as for us.  This was the first time John Hutt has had a win!  John has been playing with us for the last 3 years or so, and today he was on top of the world and his putter did the talking.  It’s always good to see new blood on that podium, especially when they are a Chelsea supporter!

Finally, we say a big ‘thank-you’ to Mr. Hutt for his contributions to the Caddy Smile program that Dave Ferris and Phil Smedley are running, but more on that next week.
