Monday, Feb. 17, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford

1st Muffy Kerr (12) 43pts

2nd Barry Tregurtha (18) 40pts

T3rd Alan Rothwell (6) 39pts

T3rd Ian Brimble (7) 39pts

T3rd Dave Mather (9) 39pts

First off, there has been a schedule change for March.  The Kabinburi/Kantary road trip has been changed to Soi Dao, still on the 13th and 14th.  This is an overnighter with 2 green fees, hotel with breakfast and a wine and cheese pool party as well for 2,900 baht.  It’s great fun so sign up soon as we only have 24 slots.  If you have never been to Soi Dao, it is a breathtaking golf course up in the cool mountain air and just 3 hours down the road.

Phil Smedley with Barry Tregurtha and Ian Brimble.

Now back to the golf and if it’s Monday it must mean Green Valley.  Once again we were oversold, overbooked and underpaid but that didn’t stop us and the 40 brave souls who joined the comp.  As you can see from the leaderboard, we had some great golfers out there today.

At a 3-way tie for third, and all at 39 by the way, we had Alan Rothwell, Liverpool supporter Ian Brimble, and your man from Newcastle, Dave Mather.  A stroke ahead and hitting that magic number 40 was our favourite Bookmaker to the Stars, Mr. Barry Tregurtha.

But it was darksider Muffy Kerr (you know, Ty and Jason’s Dad) who must have thought it was a cakewalk out there today as a magnificent 43 points took him to the top.  That’s a great round of golf and sure to cut the old handicap, eh?  Well played Muffy, it must have been that LoudMouth outfit that did the trick!

Wednesday, Feb. 19, Pattavia Century (white tees) – Stableford

1st Alan Rothwell (6) 36pts

2nd Reg Glass (15) 34pts

3rd Marcel De Kind (30) 33pts

A cool but overcast day was in store for us and that adds up to perfect golfing weather.  It is still a tough final 8 kilometers to get to this course, but what a great track to find when you do finally arrive.  The greens here were running around 10-11 on the stimpmeter and many greens were crowned to make for a difficult round of golf.  That’s OK, we love a challenge so let’s get on with it.

This course was bought by Chang Brewery about a year ago and they have done a great job so far of getting things fixed up.  It is a Sir Nick Faldo design and with a green fee of 600 baht, one would think it is the best value course in town.

Fairways were tight and you had to have your mind, and hands, in a “links” mode as the hard greens took you off the back if you tried to land near the pin.

A pretty Pattavia is back on track.A pretty Pattavia is back on track.

Only one golfer shot their handicap today as Pattavia proved to be a fine challenge for the lads.  Alan Rothwell, who has been up on the podium on a regular basis lately, was the man of the day and his 36 on the scorecard was enough for the prime position.  Reg “have another” Glass was a couple behind with 34 and Marcel DeKind in third with 33 points.

And now, a sad tale for my return to golf after nearly 2 years off.  I forgot to count my clubs after the long absence so when there looked to be loads of metal sticking out, I stopped counting after 15 and had to DQ with 34 points on the card.  Shame, but it felt great to get back out there anyway!

Friday, Feb. 21, Greenwood A&B (white tees) – Monthly Medal

1st Barry Tregurtha (18) net 67

T2nd Phil Smedley (10) net 70

T2nd Ian Brimble (7) net 70

3rd Mike Rushant (12) net 73

T4th Bryan Carroll (19) net 74

T4th Mick Robinson (16) net 74

40 golfers were signed up for the Monthly Medal today and there was a great buzz on the 1st tee at Greenwood.  This is getting to be a real fun event for The Golf Club and you had better sign up early if you want to be in the hunt.

It was a cast of characters for this month’s leaderboard and the usual suspects were all right there.  Bryan Carroll got in another fine round before his return to Scotland and shared 4th with Mick Robinson.  Mike Rushant took sole third place while Ian Brimble and our Golf Captain Phil Smedley also tied with a net 70.

Blowing away the field and shooting lights out when he has to, Barry the Book came through again with a fine 67 to win this month’s TGC Monthly Medal.  I have played with Barry several times and this guy can perform under pressure, so it’s a great win for “The Book”!
