Travellers Rest Golf Group
Monday, June 12, The Emerald – Stableford
1st Joe Depasquale (13) 38pts
2nd Ted Senior (17) 37pts
3rd Jim Cooper (16) 36pts
The wonderful wilds of Emerald Golf course on the Monday following the infamous Scotland v England world cup match. With off season work being undertaken on the course the golfers were greeted with greens that that were not as quick as they had previously been. This however did not inhibit certain players and the scoring was generally pretty good.
Jim Cooper, still protesting the unfairness of Harry Kane’s late equaliser, managed to put aside his feelings of angst to score 36 points and take third place. It was quite apt therefore that Jim was just beaten into second by Ted Senior who spent the day claiming that Joe Hart, the goalkeeper for his beloved Manchester City, does stop the odd shot that isn’t just rolled straight at him.
Despite an array of competitive scores no player could match the efforts of Joe Depasquale and his 38 points were good enough to walk away with the day’s top prize.
Tuesday, June 13, Phoenix – Stableford
1st Jack Mooney (19) 35pts
2nd Thomas Nilsson (13) 32pts
3rd Yasuo Sakai (10) 31pts
Tuesday’s visit to Phoenix coincided with a cloudless sky and steaming temperatures that are features of summer golf on the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand.
Yasuo Sakai 31 points were good enough for third place but not enough to take the silver from Thomas Nilsson who scored 32.
Brutal temperatures and harsh conditions are tailor made for the skills of Jack Mooney. With no effort wasted on activities, such as smiling and being jolly, Jack took the rest of the field to the cleaners with his 35 points being good enough to get him to the top of the podium.
Wednesday, June 14, Pattana – Stableford
1st Gabe Dakwa (14) 35pts
2nd Derek Thorogood (18) 32pts
3rd Richard Talbot (16) 31pts
The very best of playing golf in the low season was in evidence at Pattana on Wednesday. With beautiful weather and no queues the potential for good scoring was helped further by fast true greens.
Richard Talbot scored 31 points to take third but there was no way he was ever going to wrestle second spot away from boss Derek Thorogood. On this day there were other forces at work which culminated in a rock shot at a water hazard. As the “chosen one’s” ball was plummeting into some murky depths, a magical rock appeared, bouncing the ball not only on to the green, but to within 10 feet of the flag.
All of these shenanigans were not enough to put off Gabe Dakwa who started the round hitting the ball long, and as the round developed he got longer. This laid back man from San Francisco eventually finished with 35 points to take away the day’s top prize.
Thursday, June 15, Silk Oak – Stableford
1st Roger Wilkinson (15) 39pts
2nd Craig Smith (16) 36pts
3rd Peter Seil (09) 36pts
Thursday’s visit to Silky Oak was dominated by high scoring and of the 13 players participating, 12 scored over 30 points.
Peter Seil took third spot and his 36 points kept at bay the infamy of becoming double digit handicapper. This is fast becoming a major saga at the TRGG… will he or won’t he?
Craig Smith, playing only his second round at the TRGG, pipped Peter for second as a result of better back 9, however, the clear winner with 39 points was Roger Wilkinson and it coincided with his 10,000th game of golf at the TRGG.
Friday, June 16, Burapha – Stableford
1st Stew Grant (22) 41pts
2nd Ted Senior (15) 38pts
3rd Eddie Townsend (22) 38pts
Burapha A and B courses were the venue for Friday’s golf and, as always here, good conditions resulted in some excellent scores being produced.
Eddie Townsend rolled back the years to shoot a fine 38 points and take third place but was squeezed out of the second spot by virtue of Ted Senior’s better back 9.
The round of the day came from Canadian school teacher Stew Grant who scored 41 points. This was Stew’s first win at the TRGG in 13 attempts so this victory was well received by the management. In fact, they were doubly happy as Stew is only 40 years old so it just shows that TRGG’s youth policy is flourishing.
Saturday, June 17, Pleasant Valley – Stableford
1st Billy Allan (16) 40pts
2nd Brendan Abbot (21) 38pts
3rd Rob Herald (18) 35pts
The theme of high scoring continued into Saturday for the visit to Pleasant Valley. In third place came Rob Herald with 35 points and Brendan Abbot took second with 38. However, the day belonged to course specialist Billy Allan with a fine round of 40 points. It was only ten rounds ago that the smooth talking Liverpudlian Ann Summers salesman shot 46 points at the same venue. Since that peak, Billy has sadly averaged only 25 points per game so this result came as a welcome relief to him.
