Jomtien Golf with the IPGC
Monday, Sept. 24, Green Valley – Stableford
It is remarkable for this time of the year that we had a field of 41 players out today in three divisions with the equal cuts at 5-15 in division 1, 16- 20 in division 2 and of course 21+ in the third division.
Over the past six years that we have been playing here as Jomtien Golf there have been some remarkable scores returned, with scores of 45, 44 and slightly lower this has been the norm here, and now playing off 17 the South African boy Jerry Sweetnam won today in Division 2 with 44 points. Bryan Rought took second on place 36 and Paul Hartley was third one point behind.
Wilf Latham topped Division 1 with 37 points after beating Kari Kuparinen on a 20/18 back nine count back and Chris Voller, still playing off 8, was third with 35 points.
Ian Plummer, not shopping today with his wife Anne, won Division 3 with 37 points ahead of Bryan Priestley in second three points behind and in third place with 33 points was the China based Bristol boy, Bob Poole.
Near pins went to Jeff Codeiro, Grenville Hill, Ian Spiers (2), Andy Crabb, Ian Hart, Rod Howett and Bryan Priestley.
In the 2’s there was a rollover to Bangpra next Monday in division 1 and Ian Hart and Rod Howett birdied the 12th to split the pot in division 2.
Wednesday, Sept. 26, Eastern Star – Stableford
It was very dark in the distance as we drove down towards the coast and with heavy rain yet again here in Jomtien overnight we wondered if we would be playing today.
It was our second Wednesday trip here in two weeks due to a management competition here at Eastern Star on Friday, which is our normal competition day, and we still had two divisions out with the cut at 8-14 and 16 plus in division 2.
In Division 1 there were four scores returned with 35 points and a back nine count back of 21/19/18/15 saw Marty Rock in first place ahead of Wilf Latham, Mikael Andersson and Iain Usher finishing in that order.
Joe Kubon won Division 2 with 34 points while Paul Hartley took second after beating Harry Vincenzi on a 17/16 back nine count back, both coming in with 33 points.
Near pins went to Arthur Hancock (2), Tony Kay, Jon Lay, Mark Armstrong and Joe Kubon.
In the ‘2’s today, Tony Kay birdied the 6th as well as Wilf Latham and Jon Lay the 3rd to share the Division 1 prize and Mark Armstrong birdied the tough 13th over the water to split the rollover pot with Joe Kubon after the latter sank a three-foot putt on the 17th.
Friday, Sept. 28, The Emerald – Match-play and Stableford
Our annual challenge, a match-play game over two rounds against the Ban Chang based Backyard Boys at Emerald was cancelled fifteen minutes before our first tee-off time due to horrendous rain overnight here and heavy showers all the way down to the course this morning.
We had 12 players in each team and another 16 in an individual stableford competition today, so this is now postponed until next Friday where the first round will commence at Eastern Star, our venue. The following Friday we will be back for the second round here at the Emerald.
As a final note, we have received some positive updates coming in regarding Fred Duffy’s health back in Scotland and we will keep you all posted.
