Well you didn’t have to wait long for the title guy’s story to emerge – Jez ‘the president’ Lees made a rare appearance at the society and made off with the lead crystal decanter, a bottle of Jamerson’s Irish whisky, an invite to the gold medal to be played later in the year, and his name will also be etched on the Lewiinski’s wall of shame. The decanter will have plenty of space in Jez’s trophy cabinet but not many friends.
Medal winner Jez Lees (centre) with Colin Davis (left) and Freddy Starbeck.
Jez’s net 67 was two clear of C Flight companion Terry ‘pork chop’ Mangan and seven clear of the tandem of Hank-Ter Braak and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw. Irish eyes weren’t smiling however when the count back was announced and Peter was left in the bog.
B Flight was the quiet flight of the day but Gerry ‘the Irish rover’ Roche wasn’t complaining as he took the top spot with a net 69. Micky ‘nine holes’ Beresford lifted the silver with a steady net 70 as Aussie starlet Nick Odnoral closed the flight with a net72.
The pride of Aberdeen, Mark Wood, top scored in the premier flight with a net 68 and was two clear of Irishman Paraic McManus, who edged the two pack of Aussie star Bob Watson and Dave Stockman. Bob’s more favourable inner nine provided him with a trip to the pay window while Dave stood and watched.
Mark Wood, a brace, and seven other players shared the 2’s pot
Tuesday, Feb. 3, Burapha A & B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Patrick Kelly (+3) 33pts
2nd Rob Blow (11) 31pts
3rd Ian Pickles (15) 31pts
B Flight
1st Marcus Earp (35) 36pts
2nd Tom Cotton (23) 33pts
3rd Roland Bangerter (18) 32pts
The society found Bangpra a hard nut to crack as Marcus Earp out drew and out gunned the field with a man of the match and B Flight top spot 35 points. Marcus was followed up the podium steps by Tom Cotton on 33 points while Roland Bangerter closed the flight a further shot in arrears.
Patrick ‘plus two’ Kelly was the top score in the premier flight with 33 points and was two clear of the tandem of Rob Blow and Ian Pickles. Rob showed he knew how this game was played as he took the count back from Ian.
Pat Harney was the sole heir to a very healthy 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Feb. 4, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
A Flight
1st Thierry Petrement (13) 33pts
2nd Bob Watson (3) 33pts
3rd Bruce Anderson (9) 33pts
B Flight
1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 41pts
2nd Goran Asp (24) 36pts
3rd Mike Coghlan (20) 35pts
Another welcome visit to Royal Lakeside saw a fair crowd hit the road and a few mango trees by the look of the scores. Mike ‘the Welsh Dragon’ Jeffreys shot the lights out in B Flight with the day’s best return, a very impressive 41 points. Mike was also the only player to better his handicap as the other 30 odd players succumbed to the tough layout and lightning fast greens!
Goran Asp, with a steady even par round, picked up the B Flight silver as Mike Coghlan tided up the flight a shot back.
It was very tight in A Flight as the podium steps were taken by three players log-jammed on 33 points; ‘Nice guy’ Thierry Petrement emerged from the pile up with the gold, Aussie star Bob Watson received the silver and Bruce Anderson the bronze.
Bob Watson, Andre Van Dyke and Goran Asp shared the 2’s pot.
Thursday, Feb. 5, Treasure Hills – Stableford
A Flight
1st Tom Gorey (12) 32pts
2nd Lawrie McBride (13) 30pts
3rd Paul Bray (8) 29pts
B Flight
1st Colm O’Donavan (20) 33pts
2nd Aiden Murray (19) 32pts
3rd Peter McCann (17) 30pts
C Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (21) 39pts
2nd Ed O’Meara (21) 33pts
3rd John Hartigan (23) 30pts
Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw left nothing to chance on this day as he surpassed the entire field by six points in C Flight and he was the only player to better his handicap. Peter’s good friend Ed O’Meara joined him on the podium, but only at shoulder height, as John Hartigan filled the third spot.
Tom ‘the Irish rover’ Gorey carried on with the Irish theme in A Flight as his 32 points took the Flight gold while the second and third places were filled with two non-members, Leo Mullany and John Nalty, which resulted in Lawrie McBride being gifted the silver with 30 points and Paul Bray the bronze on 29, but Paul did have to get the better of Connie Walsh in a count back.
B Flight was also won by another Paddy, Colm O’Donavan with 33 points. Pay window specialist Aiden Murray filled the silver spot and the bonze was decided on count back as Peter McCann; Big Frank McNamara and Jimmy ‘AAK47’ Bell went head to head, the scales tipping in Big Frank’s favour. Peter McCann would have taken the bronze if only he had he been a member.
Rob Blow, Ed Wyckoff and Sean O’Brien shared the 2’s pot.
Friday, Feb. 6, Pattavia Century – Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Ennis (14) 36pts
2nd Frank O’Hara (14) 29pts
3rd Pen Caruthers (14) 29pts
B Flight
1st Eddie O’Meara (21) 34pts
2nd Tony Tolan (20) 34pts
3rd John Ianson (27) 34pts
The always difficult Sir Nick Faldo designed Pattavia Century again proved to be hard to score on as no player managed to better his handicap. The top score of the day was posted by A Flight’s Peter Ennis with 36 points. Peter was followed up the podium steps at a distance by the tandem of Frank O’Hara and Pen Caruthers, both looked on 29 points but Frank’s inner nine proved to be better distributed than Pen’s.
B Flight was decided on a three-way count back as Eddie O’Meara, Tony Tolan and John Ianson were log-jammed on 34 points; the resulting count back dictated the that they climb the podium in that order.
Not surprisingly no 2’s were recorded.
