The Billabong Bar Golf Society

Monday, July 24, Phoenix – Stableford

We had one hell of a storm that came across the lake as we were having breakfast and thinking golf might be postponed for today, the course is only 20 minutes away from the Billabong so we took the drive.  When we got there it was just high cloud and a perfect day for golf, carts were allowed on the fairways and the course was in great condition.  We did get a few who dropped out due to the inclement weather but we still had 3 groups playing.

There was a count back for third place between Sandy Chapo and John Cogan, with John getting the nod for that place with 34 points.  It was also count back time for top spot between Capt. Bob and his good mate Bob Van Mol over from Vietnam for a short break.  The Captain’s card was configured 16 /20 but the other Bob went a great deal better with 12/24, a great finish indeed and shooting the lights out on the back-nine.

There were four ‘2’s, although there was no prize for them today.  Terry O’Connor, Bob Van Mol, Bob Philp and Lloyd Shuttleworth were all on the mark.

Wednesday, July 26, Silky Oak – Monthly  Medal

We were not surprised, following the recent unpredictable weather, to find dark, heavy clouds and rain first thing in the morning and this continued until we reached the course.  We have all heard the saying ‘the sun shines on the righteous’, well the rain stopped as a courtesy to those from the Billabong and we enjoyed the monthly medal sponsored by Brian Chapman.

Four holes were closed on Green Valley so off we went to Silky Oak.  There were some very wet patches but, overall, the fairways had dried very well and preferred lies were hardly necessary.  A large field of 42 players who were not deterred by the early morning rain, including 16 ladies, played 18 holes in perfect conditions.

Miss Yen came third in the ladies flight with a net 73 and would have challenged for the top prize but for a triple bogey on the ninth hole.  The same could be said of Miss Ooh, taking second place on a count back despite a triple on the 15th.  Miss May took the honours with 8 pars for her net 71.

Capt. Bob kept everyone amused when announcing the men’s prizes, changing the order more than once and announcing Tony Oakes in third place but then relegating him to fourth on a recount.  This was beneficial to Dick Baimbridge for he came from nowhere to finish third.  No trouble with the winners, however, for Sel Wegner lost out to his playing partner John Player, both with a net 66.  John had 39 gross on the back-nine, carding an excellent 85 gross on the day.

Five ‘2’s were posted by Ann, Sasicha, Lynn, William Macey and Brett Gale.

Friday, July 28, Phoenix Gold – Scramble

Phoenix for the monthly scramble today and with 12 teams it turned out a great day for golf.  The course was in excellent condition with the rough being mown down a little to make it a bit more comfortable for the average golfer.

Miss May took the medal in the ladies flight.

Coming in third today were the Valley Hackers, consisting of Ed Horrocks, Rick Hiate, Ted Gardner and Chris with a net score of 60.  Second place went to Damian Trant and his son James, Karen Craigie and Alan Beck with a net score of 59, but winning back to back with 56 net was the team of Neil, Simon Philbrook, Paul Hack and Paul Smith.

We had a bell ring from Paul to celebrate his hole in one earlier in the week.
