Sunday, Sept. 13, Green Valley – Monthly Medal

A Flight

1st JP Maffray (13) net 70

2nd Phil Davies (12) net 74

3rd Barry Copestake (15) net 76

B Flight

1st Kevin Hamilton (17) net 70

2nd Eddy Beilby (18) net 70

3rd Ian Jones (25) net 72

JP Maffray, whom this column has cited as a nice guy several times previously, won A Flight but more importantly took home the cut lead crystal goblet emblematic of the monthly medal, which in this case was for September 2015.  To do so JP had to shoot a co-man of the match net 70 and then win a count back over the B Flight pair of ‘Big’ Kevin Hamilton, who had two wipes on his card (one of which was a ten on the par-5 15th hole), and Eddy ‘the Eagle Bielby.  No small undertaking that!

JP was four strokes clear of A Flight companion Phil ‘the Welsh wonder’ Davies and a further two shots clear of Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake.

Kevin Hamilton’s back nine was more evenly dispersed than Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Bielby’s and he took top spot in B Flight.  A count back was again required to separate Ian Jones and Peter ‘no nick name’ Henshaw, both with steady even par rounds, and the scales of justice were tipped in Ian’s favour, leaving Peter to prop up the bar.

Meanwhile, JP was graciously sharing his bottle of Jameson’s Irish whiskey with his mates.

Monday, Sept. 14, Palm Hills – Stableford

1st Kevin Rogers (13) 39pts

2nd Peter Henshaw (25) 37pts

3rd Aulaiwan Makmul (31) 35pts

16 golfers arrived at Palm Hills in Hau Hin on Monday and found the course to be in excellent condition.  The weather was also fine on the front nine, but then the heavens opened up and those lucky enough to be near the drink stations were able to keep dry while those that weren’t sat in there buggies with umbrellas raised.  The fairways flooded in many areas, and the green on one par 3 turned onto a lake, but fair play, once the rain had stopped after about 30 minutes the greens drained and were playable.

Having started with carts on the fairways there was no ‘pick, clean and place’ as you cannot change the rules half way through the game.

Only two players broke their handicaps, Aussie ace Kevin Rogers with a man of the match 39 points and Peter ‘no nick name’ Henshaw with a rock solid 37.  Lady golfer Aulaiwan Makmul rounded out the podium with 35 points.

Tuesday, Sept. 15, Banyan G.C. – Stableford

1st Martin Allard (24) 39pts

2nd Jim Elphick (26) 38pts

3rd John Harney (13) 37pts

Day two saw us at a lot of people’s favourite Hua Hin course, Banyan, and again the players found it to be in immaculate condition and the weather was perfect for golf – a cloudy sky and a lovely breeze reminded us of playing golf in the UK.

The golf improved over Monday’s efforts with three people bettering their handicap.  Top man today was Martin Allard with a sparkling 39 points and he was followed up the podium steps was Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick just a shot in arrears.  Ireland’s favourite son John Harney closed the flight podium with 37 points.  Everybody enjoyed this day.

Wednesday, Sept. 16, Black Mountain G.C. – Stableford

1st Nick Shaw (19) 43pts

2nd John Harney (13) 41pts

3rd Nantaporn Rukkid (18) 39pts

Day three we all arrived at the Back Mountain championship course in the rain, which got heavier as our tee time approached and we offered our slots to the Sugar Shack boys who were also there enjoying a holiday.  They politely declined our offer so we made our way to the first tee in the rain, however the golfing gods smiled down on us and the rain eased off and then stopped completely.  The rain returned very heavy as we made our way up the eighteenth fairway but it did not spoil the day when seven plays beat their handicap.

Leading the boys and girls in was Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw with a man of the match and best score on the trip 43 points.  Irishman John Harney must have thought he had done enough to have won, and on any other day he would have, he just picked the wrong day to shoot 41 points.

Lady golfer Nantaporn Rukkid took the final podium spot with a splendid 39 points.

Everybody enjoyed the trip to Hua Hin and the next one will be eagerly awaited.
