The Billabong Bar Golf Group
Monday, Feb. 4, Treasure Hill – Stableford
Monday our venue was Treasure Hill where the course is in good shape but the greens were like lightning, talk about fast!
We got there and were ready to go off 30 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time, and much to our surprise the starter said you can go now if you want to. We thought it was a bit strange as when we arrived the lady said they were booked solid and pointed out we very early, maybe there were a few no shows.
We were around in 4 hours and there was a slight breeze making perfect conditions for golf. We had 5 groups today, including Dick Mohns back to join us from Canada, and Peter Shuttleworth, Lloyd’s brother who had not seen each other for a few years so there was some good hearted banter between them.
Wednesday top three: JJ Harney, Richard Holmes and Bill Marsden.
The score’s weren’t very good today with only Brian Maddox playing to handicap. His winning score of 36 points was 7 better than Lloyd Shuttleworth on 29 points, then the old master Bob Pearce off his new handicap of 18, scoring 28 points got third on a count back from Gary Ritchie. Coming in fifth was Capt Bob with 27 on a count back over Peter Shuttleworth, sorry mate.
Once again there were no ‘2’s – I can’t believe that the quality of golfers that play here can’t get a ‘2’ now and again but that’s the way it is.
Wednesday, Feb. 6, Green Valley – Stableford
Today was our usual drive down the 36 road to Green Valley for our Wednesday match. We were told it was fully booked and that we couldn’t increase our tee slots, but on talking to the starter he showed me his sheet and pointed to the 4 groups ahead of us and said they won’t be here so off you go.
Our first group teed off at nine and the last at 9.35, so all went well for a change. Even though they have had some rain at the course it was buggy’s all over so there was no need for ‘lift and place’.
There were some mighty fine scores in also: Midge and his team from Aussie were back for a shot at us and Davo managed to get into the prizes. George Barrie thought it would be prudent to buy the guys who saw his first tee shot a beer to shut them up, enough said on that.
In the winner’s circle from last to first was Davo with 34 points on a count back from John Locke; third was JJ Harney on 35 points, second was Kiwi Bill Marsden on 39 points and first was the man having a red hot streak at the moment, Richard Holmes with 41 points.
There were five ‘2’s coming from JJ Harney, Richard Holmes, Martin Kingswood and Kiwi Bill had two.
Have a great holiday in Africa with the Lawton’s Martin – don’t let John lead you astray too much.
There was also some bad news today as we learned of the passing away of our good friend ‘Gentleman’ George Bishop. I know you will be looking down on us George and saying play well.
Friday, Feb. 8, Plutaluang – Stableford
The Navy course’s East and South layout was the venue for the monthly four-man scramble, and what a fun day out it was. The usual bottles of Sangsom with Birdy coffee mixed in were very tasty indeed!
With 8 teams competing we were off nearly 45 minutes ahead of our scheduled tee time as there was nobody there waiting. There were some good scores in with the top two teams each scoring 9 birdies and no bogeies. It was therefore down to the handicap to establish the winners.
The 3rd placed team consisted of JJ Harney, Dave Hausman, Scott Eaton and Pat Kavanagh and their score was 62.2. In second place was the team calling themselves the Courtyard Cavaliers with a net score of 57.6 and their team consisted of Geoff Couch, Jeff North, Dave Done and John Locke, who had trouble with his arm and could only chip and putt on the last nine holes. The winners were the Kiwi Connection of Lloyd Shuttleworth, Peter Shuttleworth, Bill Marsden and Capt Bob with a net score of 56.9.
The next scramble will be on the 18th February and the tee time will be 10.40 am. If you would like to join the Billabong golf group for a round of golf, just turn left at the arch going toward Siam Country Club Old Course – we are 200 yards on the right, or give Bob a call on 082 204 3411.
