PSC Golf from The GrowlingSwan

Monday, July 27, Mt. Shadow – Stableford

Only two busloads were required to ferry today’s enthusiasts to spar with the Shadow, and only one player could remain standing.

Playing off the blue tees for a change was no excuse for the lower than average scores.  Although the putting greens were tricky with their contours forever coming into play, the course itself presented no real issues and plenty of run was available if fairways were hit.

Perhaps it was the mental ploy of teeing off from the blues that played havoc with some players, as two in this writer’s group failed to make the red tees and it was later reported that one player didn’t even reach the whites!  I hate to mention names but John Anderson wanted it known that his ball rebounded off a tree to achieve this feat.

Other than the above, no other worthy comments come to hand suffice to say that the weather was terrific.  Salubrious overcast warm conditions kept everyone in a cocoon of comfort for the duration of play.

Following the day’s event we all showered and headed back to the Swan for cold refreshments and our host Peter Grey commenced his eulogy; firstly welcoming the boys from the Vines area of Western Australia, Hugh Knox, Gary Jones and Craig Duncan, and then going on to praise the WA lads who took out almost half the available prize winning slots.

The field was given a run down to third spot, due to the low numbers today, and Hugh Knox was the winner with 36 points.  Alex Field came second and Mark Stapleton again made the podium, both with 32 point cards.  Coincidentally all three played off the same handicap!

1st Hugh Knox (18) 36pts

2nd Alex Field (18) 33pts

3rd Mark Stapleton (18) 32pts

With the Compass Cap/NAGA award now being retired it was Russell Calcutts pleasure to take Deefa “the charity toy dog” around the throng for some spare change to boost his collections. This dog has collected much needed funds to help the less than fortunate of Pattaya and surrounding areas, with tens of thousands of baht having been injected over the past few years to several institutions or needy families via the PSC.

Deefa’s bowl is currently in excess of 50,000 baht and the PSC will soon again be contacted to look for a situation where the golfers who have kindly dug deep, can be rewarded in the knowledge that their generosity has been well distributed.

Note: The GS is a “friendly” golf outlet and caters for and encourages all golfers, young and old, male or female to have a hit on any of our weekly outings.  We generally play Mondays and Thursdays at one of the many fine golf courses in and around Pattaya. Please contact Peter Grey if you are interested in playing on 0861 503086

The Growling Swan also caters to the bowls enthusiasts.  Bus transport departs the GS on Wednesdays at 10 AM when they go to Coco’s for undercover, synthetic green bowls and on Sundays at the same time for open, grass bowling at The Retreat.  Please contact Paul Rennison on 0843 454005 if you wish to partake.  The cost including return bus transport, bowling fees and a hot lunch is about 350 baht, so great value for a day out!
