Monday, Nov. 13, Crystal Bay B & C (white tees) – Stableford

Division 1 (0–16)

2nd Allan Hanlon (14) 33pts
3rd Darryl Burkett (12) 33pts
4th Darryl Kellett (14) 31pts
Division 2 (17+)

2nd Dick Heaney (17) 35pts
3rd Vinny Lazell (19) 33pts
4th Shuichi Kodaka (18) 31pts
The week started out at Crystal Bay where the B and C courses were found to be in good condition with the greens very puttable and with the rest of the course playing well.
The first division was led in by Kevin Blake whose form had been suffering of late but on this day he made few mistakes to run out the winner by seven clear.
Allan Hanlon returned to win a count-back with a better 18 to 16 which left Darryl Burkett in third and Darryl Kellett another two behind in fourth place.
The second division was swept away by an outstanding round by Mike Korney who shot his best ever round in Thailand at eight under handicap to win by a clear nine points. His card showed a mammoth 28 points on the B course following a terrific gross 38, while a slightly more sedate 18 points on the back nine kept most of the crowd quiet at the presentations, although some had to resort to smelling salts.
Dick Heaney signed off with the group with a second place two ahead of Vinny Lazell in third and Shuichi Kodaka another two back in fourth.
There were no 2s in the first division but Dick Heaney cleaned out the rollover pool in the second division in his last competition of this trip.
Wednesday, Nov. 15, Treasure Hill (yellow tees) – Stableford
CSS 73
1st Mike Korney (20) 36pts
2nd Jon Batty (6) 34pts
3rd Vinny Lazell (19) 33pts
4th Mark Lang (6) 32pts
5th Markku Tynell (23) 31pts
6th Trevor Schirmer (16) 30pts
A much tougher day was experienced by the hopefuls when they travelled to play Treasure Hill where even with a ‘lift and place’ local rule on the day couldn’t help the scores.
Mike Korney was again the best of them, but on this occasion eight shots worse, at level par but that proved to be good enough by two for his second win of the week.
Jon Batty may well have thought that his two over handicap would stand up for the win as the course was playing particularly long with very little run to be had from the tee shots, but he had to be satisfied with a second place on this occasion.
Vinny Lazell again showed well in third place another shot behind and one ahead of fourth placed Mark Lang, who is still awaiting a return to his old form.
Markku Tynell slipped into fifth place another shot back and another one in front of Trevor Schirmer.
There were no 2s in either of the divisions.
Friday, Nov. 17, Eastern Star (white tees) – Stableford
CSS 73
1st Vinny Lazell (19) 36pts
2nd Brendan Dunne (28) 31pts
3rd Christer Olsson (16) 31pts
4th Markku Tynell (23) 31pts
5th Rodney Nabbe (13) 30pts
6th Mike Korney (20) 28pts
Once again the scoring was affected by the wet conditions all around the course.
Vinny Lazell capped a strong showing throughout the week with a maiden win with the group, winning by a clear five points with a level handicap return that was exceptional in the conditions.
Brendan Dunne then won a three-way count back for second place with a best 16 points with returnee Christer Olsson taking third after he closed out the back six with 12 points to Markku Tynell’s 8. Rodney Nabbe took fifth with Mike Korney dropping down to sixth this time.
Phil Cass cleaned out the second division 2s rollover pot with his solo effort on the 157-yard 15th hole whilst Dave Edwards had to share the massive first division rollover pool with Andrew Purdie, his playing partner, as he watched him chip in from the edge on the 172-yard 17th after he had slipped in a long one on the same hole.
