La Familia team members celebrate with the trophy after winning the 2018 Queen’s Cup Pink Polo tournament at Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Pattaya, Saturday, March 3.

The Thai Polo & Equestrian Club in Pattaya was decked out in hues of pink on Saturday, March 3 as the venue staged the 10th edition of the annual Queen’s Cup ‘Pink Polo’ tournament.

More than 700 spectators, including celebrities, VIPs and socialites turned up to show their support for an event which raises funds for the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer in Bangkok.  They were treated to a spectacular day of equestrian events, fashion shows, children’s activities and exclusive shopping opportunities at sponsors’ booths.

Jointly organized by Thailand’s first lady polo player and co-owner of Thai Polo & Equestrian Club, Nunthinee Tanner, and Dr. Kris Chatamra, founder and director of the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer, the event encourages everyone to wear pink colours to show their support for the fight against breast cancer and those in attendance this year did not disappoint on the attire front.

“We hope that our event increases awareness of the threat which breast cancer poses to many women.  At the same time, we hope it will also introduce a new generation to the exciting game of polo”, commented Nunthinee Tanner.

In the tournament itself, the polo on show from the five all female teams was of an impressive standard and La Familia emerged the overall winners after defeating La Tabita in a high scoring and entertaining final.  Despite conceding the opening goal, La Familia overwhelmed their opponents with superior attacking play and took the trophy with a deserved 8-3 victory.

Host team Thai Polo were eliminated 8-7 by La Familia in a tense semi-final, conceding the winning goal with just seconds left on the game clock, but they took a consolation third place on the podium ahead of team La Esperanza.
