Monday, March 18, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Phoenix Gold on Monday and with a somewhat smaller field than normal we were away on time in grand conditions, a nice breeze and a lot of cloud cover to keep the heat away. With just over a third of the players not scoring over 30 points it made the winners’ scores look very good.

There was a countback between Glenn Smith and Brian Orr, both on 36 points, with Glenn taking second and Brian third. The winner Gerard Lambert had his best round for a long time and came in with an 86 off the stick for 40 points off his 18 handicap.

There were three 2s, coming from Rod Crosswell, Gerard Lambert and Brian Orr.

Wednesday, March 20, Green Valley – Stableford

Green Valley’s irrigation system might be in need of an update as today I had a free drop on four occasions for casual water and the cause was not rain.

The competition for places in the ladies competition was fierce and four players on 35 points did not get a mention. Miss May (H/cap 11), having more birdies – three – than pars, lost out to Miss Nu (16) on the same score but with 19 points on the way home which included 7 pars and 1 birdie. Miss Noodle (14) started the round off well with 7 points in the first 2 holes and another 7 points in the last 2 holes in her 38 points but three double bogies on the back nine meant she fell one short of the eventual winner, Miss Sasicha (21), who found a higher gear at the turn with 22 points to win the day.

Auke Engelkes (12) had a poor start with only 2 points on the first 2 holes but the remaining seven holes accounted for 18 points and a 36 point total, the same score as Peter Thomas (19) but Peter had 19 on the back nine for third place. Tony Oakes (14), having received a jolt to his system with an expensive bill for air conditioning repairs, compensated for that expense by taking second place on 37 points, 2 points behind his playing partner Jeff North (9) who had a very steady round with 39 points.

For the 2s Ted Gardner  did not bother having a birdie on the par threes for he eagled the 2nd for 4 points, the other 2s going to Miss Am, Miss Poopay, Auke Engelkes and Jeff North.

Friday, March 22, Burapha – Stableford

Burapha on a hot day and with 5 groups playing we got away to an early start and completed the round in under 3½ hours. The scoring was different as we were allocated the C and D loops, which are quite a bit more difficult than the preferred A and B loops. The course was in grand condition with greens that were a little slower than normal which reflected in the scores posted.

There was a countback between Jack Piercefield and John Mills, a visitor from Perth Australia, with both scoring 32 points. Jack managed fourth place and John with the better back nine took third. Second spot went to the ever-consistent Dougie Crowe with 34 points off his 8 handicap, while the man of the moment Graham Beaumont scored a fine 35 points to take the top spot.

There was only one 2, coming from Greig Ritchie.
