PSC Golf from The Golf Club

T1st John Emmerson (15) 38pts

T3rd Kenny Aihara (4) 37pts

T3rd Gary Blackburn (8) 37pts

5th Mark Wood (7) 36pts

After months of perfect weather, we finally had some rain.  It was a huge front that covered half of Asia and had been menacing for a few days, but it came down hard for one hour and left us with a cool afternoon of golf.  We waited for about another 20 minutes for the water to drain off and all was back to normal as we played another great round at Green Valley.

A couple of ties on the leaderboard today saw Peter LeNoury and John Emmerson head to head for first with 38 points.  They shared the victory here as we only do a count back for the Monthly Medal comp.  Same deal with Kenny Aihara and Gary Blackburn, both just a shot behind on 37, which left Mark Wood on his own for sole 5th on the day.  Nice shootin’ guys!

Tuesday, March 3 Phoenix O & M (white tees) – Stableford

T1st Bob Newell (8) 37pts

T1st Al Marumoto (9) 37pts

T1st Kenny Aihara (4) 37pts

We chose to play on Tuesday this week as Wednesday was the big Buddhist holiday of Macha Bucha, hence weekend rates.  Today was the first time we have played Phoenix in over 2 years and it was good to be back.

I have yet to meet the new G.M. here, Khun Nat, but everyone says what a knowledgeable and nice guy he is.  Apparently he is coaching several Asian Tour players so he must surely know his stuff.  Phoenix are planning on closing the Lakes 9 over the low season and doing a complete makeover, and to be honest it looks like it is needed from what we saw.  It will be great to have all 27 holes of this local track to be back to its former glory.

Today was a beautiful day for golf as we had low humidity and a cool breeze for most of the back nine.  The numbers speak for themselves, and it was good to welcome back from The Players Lounge the one and only Bob Newell (yes, our former Golf Manager) and didn’t he do well!  I can’t repeat the Bruce Forsythe jokes he told, but needless to say we had a great time out there.  Higher Bob, higher!  He managed to tie for first with Kenny and Al so obviously must have had the round of his life.

Friday, March 6, Wangjuntra (white tees) – 2–Man Scramble

1st Billy Eyles & Peter Rogers net 62.6

2nd Tip Briney & Steve Greenstein net 63.8

3rd Cathol Donahue & Barney Cunningham net 65.4

What can you say about Wanjan?  This place leaves me speechless (for once) as the views and layout here are just breathtaking.  We had a few newbies here that were doubtful of the 90 minute ride up, but it was all smiles afterwards as the beauty of this course wins everyone over.  It wasn’t in the best of condition as there were some dry patches on the fairways but the greens and bunkers were as good as anywhere.

We always play a 2-man scramble here as that format is the most user-friendly on a unique golf course like this.  We try to get out here every 3 or 4 months and it is especially gratifying to see first timers embrace this one of a kind track.

We use the standard USGA handicap recommendation for a 2-man scramble which is roughly 37.5% but google it for more details as it can get complicated.

The story of the day was a near hole-in-one by Kenny Aihara who ended up just 8 inches away and that is about the only thing he has missed lately.

Thanks to all who joined up with The Golf Club this week and hope to see you again soon.
