IPGC golf with The Pattaya Golf Society
On Monday, May 30, the Pattaya Golf Society fell victim to Green Valley’s ill-thought out voucher scheme and re-routed to Pattaya Country Club to play its monthly medal event, losing a group with the decision. As a result the competition had a real “low season” feel to it with a small field competing.
Pattaya C.C. was in fair condition with only the bunkers showing signs of distress and as a bonus the course was empty.
In third place with net 78 was Tony Thorne and in second was Sam McLellan showing his recent consistency with net 75. The winner was Wichai Tananusorn whose net 73 emphasised his ability to force good scores out of less than perfect conditions on a fairly heavy course in desperately humid conditions. He also took the ‘2’s pot for his excellent effort on hole 7.
Green Valley it wasn’t, but full marks to Pattaya C.C. for facing the reality of low season and offering a very good deal.
Sam’s the man
The Pattaya Golf Society travelled to Emerald in Ban Chang on Friday, June 3, to play a stableford event on the popular course. The day was excessively humid and overcast and throughout the threat of a storm caused eyes to be cast heavenwards, but in the event the day stayed dry.
The single flight saw Tony Thorne record 33 points for third place on a day which saw his putting improve somewhat and Tony Bamford, playing his first round with the group, filled the runner-up place with his 34 points. The winner was Sam McLellan with 37 points and the victory marked another successful day for the full-time holiday golfer.
The only birdie ‘2’ of the day was memorable because it was achieved by Jeff “Rabbi” Cohen on the fifteenth after an exquisite tee shot which stopped in its own pitch mark and left him with a very short tap-in for his first ever birdie ‘2’.
Mr. Len, embarking on his comeback golf with his group after a frustrating three months recuperating from surgery, received the Booby Bevy for his 12-19 split. It’s just good to be part of it all again, especially at Ban Chang!
