Lusha’s turn in the spotlight

With the advent of prospective new owners of Phoenix, the course is improving by the day.  Many trees have been trimmed back, allowing grass to grow and give room to hit the ball without catching overhanging branches and the greens are now up to an acceptable speed to be able to control the putts if you are good enough.  Have to say that if they get any quicker then there are going to be some mighty high scores.

On our outing Tuesday, July 2 we had many good scores.  With almost a full house for this time of the year all the winners from two flights were under their respective handicaps with their results.

In ‘A’ Flight it was David Lusha who once again showed his current form with a fine 42 points to take first place.  In second place was yours truly with a respectable 39 points (normally good enough to win any day) and with a score of 38 points Joe Miller regained some of his form after a lean spell to take third.

I have to add some commiserations to the two very low handicappers in the group who scored gross 77 and 75 respectively without getting on the winners rostrum.  It is very difficult for players with such low handicaps to score 39 or 40 points.  It means they have to score at virtually less than par for the course!

In ‘B’ Flight, John Clift was the victor with 39 points ahead of Jim Neilson in second place with the same score but a poorer back nine, and in third was Bill Hewitt with 38 points.

Near pin winners were Mike Allidi, Werner Schwarz, Steve Gibson & Bill Hewitt.

The lucky draw winners today (courtesy of our hosts The Relax Bar) were Fred May, Peter Harris and Arthur Busch.

Your scribe was declared to be the player of the month for June and gratefully received the Blue Olive restaurant monthly voucher.  This prize is donated by Raymond, proprietor of the restaurant and is awarded to the player with the best two scores of the month from all games played on a Friday and Tuesday with our Society. Yours truly managed two good rounds in the month to total a combined score of 77 points, winning by 3 shots from the nearest rival.

To qualify for this prize players must have played in the Society for at least 6 times in the last six months and must post at least 4 scores within the whole month.  We are also looking ahead to the high season with another new competition which will be a four-ball better-ball match play knockout.  Further details will emerge when all the rules have been agreed on.
