The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Eastern Star on Monday, 21st January to play a stableford competition in two flights with the cut at sixteen and under. The day was warm but there was an ever present wind blowing which posed problems in addition to those normally posed at Eastern Star, with water, OB and tough to putt greens. Over the last few years good scores have been rare and today was no exception.
In the top flight Paul Edgar and Larry Slattery shared second place with a mere 27 points each whilst Alan Flynn almost romped away for the win with 29 points.
In the second flight there was more respectability with Martin Hennessy and John Chelo sharing third place with 29 points and Bryan Barrell coming up with his best result in many a long month making second place his own with 32 points. The winner, with the best score of the day, 35 points, was Canadian Henry Mah and his round was very solid in most departments.
There were no birdie ‘2’s and Rabbi’s beer draw was won by Syd Harrison whilst Dave Plaiter picked up the Booby Bevy for his hero-to-zero performance after an excellent club championship performance on his previous round.
Pilkington the pick at Crystal Bay
Crystal Bay these days is a treat to play with the generally well-tended fairways and excellent greens complementing the dramatic backdrop of the clubhouse and mountains. For a golfer on top of his game there is always the opportunity to score well. Thus it was, on Wednesday, 23rd January the Pattaya Golf Society took a large group to the course to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines in two flights, cut at seventeen and under.
In the second flight Henry Mah again showed the value of sticking with the advice of his coach and he posted 35 points for third place, just one behind fellow countryman John Chelo’s 36 and second place. The flight winner was Jim Ferris with a fine 38 points to emphasise his current consistency.
In the top flight Steve Evans took third with 35 points, three behind Wichai Tananusorn whose 38 points came on a course he loves after his personal best there a few months back. The winner was Alan Pilkington whose gross seventy-seven gave him 39 points.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Alan, Fred Land, John Hackett and a brace for John Chelo and back at Rabbi’s his free beer draw was won by Larry Slattery.
Mr Len took the Booby Bevy after a rapturous back nine had seen him extend his front nine score of only four to twenty six, by a long way beating the group’s highest split record figures. Keep taking the medicine Boss!
Tananusorn top at tough Treasure Hill
Treasure Hill is always a challenge and the Pattaya Golf Society were up for it on Friday, 25th January. Currently the course is in fine condition with excellent tee boxes, good fairways and steady paced greens and the humidity being high added to the challenge off the white tees.
A tight competition followed with three golfers on 32 points sharing third place; the ever consistent Henry Mah, steady Mike Earley and Dave Edwards who loves to play the track. It took the very last putt to decide the competition and Wichai Tananusorn’s fine eight-foot effort just edged it for the popular Thai golfer.
There were birdie ‘2’s for Dave Lehane on the tough second and Mike Earley again on the seventeenth.
The boss’s free beer went to Martin Hennessy and the Booby Bevy was enjoyed by Dave Moriarty after his 14-6 split. It’s always a good test at Treasure Hill and this day was no exception.
