The Billabong Bar Golf Society

Monday, June 17, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

Pleasant Valley was our venue today and despite all the recent rain the course was surprisingly dry: carts were allowed on fairways no problem and apart from the greens being sanded and cored recently and the bunkers not being maintained at all it was a pleasant day out, not too hot with a bit of cloud cover.

I think next time back we will have a look at the bunkers before we start and if they are in the same condition they will be played as GUR.  Wake up management – get your green staff on the game.

The scores were very good and yes there were some ‘2’’s today.  Taking third place was John Aylott with 36 points while two points better in second was George Barrie, just losing a count back for top spot to Bill Marsden whose round included two blobs.

John Player and Martin Keightley each recorded a ‘2’ and George Barrie got the double, prompting him to ring the bell back at the bar.  Well done mate!

Wednesday, June 19, Green Valley – Stableford

Our normal venue of Green valley today and the weather stayed fine.  The course was in great condition and the greens were fast so everything was set for a great day out in the fresh air.

We welcomed back Scott Eaton and Les Niko over from Australia and welcomed Craig Wheeler and Bernie Stafford for their first games with the Billabong.

Bill Marsden, a man successfully trying hard to reduce his handicap was back on top of the podium again today with a modest 35 points, but enough to give him the win by one from runner up Kev Wild, who edged a three-way count back over Tom and Bernie.

There were two ‘2’s today coming from Scott Eaton and Greig Ritchie.

Friday, June 21, The Emerald – Stableford

Emerald was the venue on Friday and it wasn’t in the best of condition, with some fairways really bad where they have been sprayed, and the greens having been cored and sanded, so it made for a tough day at the office.

Les Niko was hitting the ball fantastically well until he almost knocked himself out with his three-wood as it snapped just under the grip, went up in the air and came down on his head.  His game went downhill thereafter.  I know you shouldn’t laugh at someone’s misfortune but in this case we were all rolling on the ground.

A sprinkle of rain came through towards the end of the game but not enough to affect the experience of the crack golfers out there.  Kiwi Bill couldn’t keep up his run of great golf, coming in today with also-rans.  There was three-way count back for second third and fourth with Brian Maddox taking fourth, Colonel Bob Pearce third and Scott Eaton second, while our winning hero was Wayne Cotterell with a fine 38 points.

There were three ‘2’s today coming from Alan Beck, Phil Waite and Wayne Cotterell.

Note:  The Billabong is situated just off Siam Country Club Road looking straight down Lake Mabprachan.  Sign-up for golf at the bar or call Bob on 082 204 3411.
