Monday, Jan. 15, Phoenix – Stableford

Phoenix on a beautiful day for golf, with only a small field today and with nobody getting in the way it was perfect.  The course was in fantastic condition and we started off on Ocean first then onto Mountain for the final nine holes.  The greens were as true as you could get and in the scribe’s group one putt was the norm.

The scoring wasn’t too bad but only 2 players managed to play to their handicap.  Third place went to Kev Wild with 35 points and second to Rick Culley with 36, the latter being beaten on a count-back by Paul Greenaway for top spot.

There were two ‘2’s but alas they weren’t paid today.

Wednesday, Jan. 17, Green Valley – Stableford

Following on from the Asia qualifying rounds at Green Valley, we were back to our favorite Wednesday venue.  It is said that the greens were extremely fast for the pro-tournament and had changed very little for our round today.

We had 54 playing today, which included 18 ladies and we were told by Capt. Bob and Sandy that the new Billabong was open for the presentation.  The ladies, as usual, showed the way with Miss Nu occupying fourth place with 40 points, just ahead of Miss Tan but losing on a count-back to Miss Phin.  Miss Eng had a great round, starting with a birdie, for 42 points but could not catch Miss May who had 13 pars and 1 birdie, coming home with 45 points.

The men could not compete with those scores, with Auke Engelkes coming fourth with 36 points but his birdie on the 18th could not unseat Peter Ericson on the same score.  Sandy Chapo celebrated the opening of the Billabong with 38 points but a gross 69 from David Buchanan, playing off his 1 handicap, saw him come home the winner.

Many ‘2’s today, coming from May, Wan, Som, Kevin McIntosh, Aaron New, Sandy Chapo, JJ Harney and Dougie Crowe,

Friday, Jan. 19, Burapha – Stableford

Playing Burapha on a glorious day for golf and we played A and B loops as C and D were closed for quite a large tournament.  The course was in fantastic condition apart from the rough which was almost impossible to get out of.

The scores were not too bad but only one player managed to beat his handicap and two other golfers played to theirs.  With only a small field today the prizes went down to third place which went to Alan Cassin with 36 points, him being beaten on a count-back by Thiery Petrement.  Taking the top spot was the man of the moment Sandy Chapo with 37 points and taking his second trip to the podium the week.

There were two ‘2’s, coming from Steve Dodd and Glyn Davies.
