The Pattaya Golf Society (IPGC) at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Bangpra on Monday, 12th November to play a stableford competition on the course which was very well presented and with greens a little slower than expected, which were a result of heavy overnight rain but downhill putts were still the a trip on the “highway to hell”.
The large field was divided into two flights at sixteen and under and in the second flight Brian Shaw and Dave Wilkinson shared second place with 29 points each. Dave’s wife Margaret came good with 30 points, finding the fairways regularly and making sure of the for the putts for the flight win.
In the top flight Dave Edwards and Masa Takano shared second place with 34 points each whilst Neil McIntosh took three points on the final hole to snatch the win.
Dave Edwards scored a birdie ‘2’ on the eighth hole and Rabbi’s free beer draw was won by Mr Len, at last, and he took great delight in awarding the Booby Bevy to Jeff Hunt, playing his first competition after qualifying for a handicap last time out. He still needs a few more rounds under his belt yet.
Bangpra will continue to be a favourite as long as it maintains the quality of course condition that was seen this day.
Masa signs off with a win
On Wednesday, 15th November the Pattaya Golf Society visited Crystal Bay to play a stableford competition on the C and A nines in two flights, divided at fourteen and under. The course was in excellent condition and with its generally very golfer “friendly” design and a clear sky the day was set fair for some excellent golf.
In the second flight John Mason’s rediscovered zest for the game helped him score 34 points for third, his best result for many a long day. In second was Mr Len, his 36 points being the result of some accurate tee shots and a fine display of putting. The flight winner was Brian Shaw and he recorded 39 points to equal the best of the day.
In the top flight Yasuo Suzuki took third with 36 points, one behind Jesper Hansen’s 37 in second place. The winner was Masa Takano, playing his final round this trip and his best gross figures of 76 gave him 39 points. He also recorded the only birdie ‘2’ of the day, on C7, to help with his airport taxi fare later in the evening.
Dave Edwards won the free beer draw, the only thing which went right for him all day, and the Booby Bevy was held over until the next round as the obvious winner was still travelling back to the bar in Soi Buakhao when the award was made.
Crystal Bay continues to provide excellent value as a golf venue and more good days lie ahead there throughout the next few months.
Happy returns for Murphy and Murray
The Pattaya Golf Society visited Greenwood on Friday, 16th November to play a stableford competition on the A and B nines. The course is not in its best condition at present with the remains of the early year scarring still evident on the greens, which were slow and on the A nine quite bobbly. The thick and damp Bermuda grass bordering the fairways was a problem as was the “thompsonesque” collar of uncut semi rough fronting each green. So prepare for low scoring lads!
Margaret Wilkinson maintained her consistent current form with 32 points, as did Wichai Tananusorn, setting the best gross score of the day, 83, but the honours went to Pat Murphy and Murray Edwards who finished the day with 33 points at the top of the leaderboard. Both were playing their first competition after returning from Australia.
There were no birdie twos and the Booby Bevy went to Khun Wichai after he was caught testing the post match snacks in Rabbi’s kitchen, claiming as he did that he was running a quality control exercise.
The free beer draw was won by Jeff Hunt and the “apres-golf” discussion focussed on how to play a course like Greenwood with its peculiarly necklaced greens in soft and uncut conditions. All answers will be treated with absolute confidentiality!
