PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society

Monday, August 17, Pattana, B & C – Stableford

Pattana was the venue for our first game of this week and we had a healthy four groups ready to participate.  Departing The Phantom Bar right on time at 8.30am we arrived at the golf course 50 minutes later despite having to weave our way through the very heavy Monday morning traffic as we left Pattaya.

The course was quite busy so there was no chance of an early start and our first group got away right on time at 10.00am.  The weather was fine & hot with no sign of rain and the course was as usual in great shape, with lush fairways and well maintained, true greens.

Mogens Melander.

The going was somewhat slow due to the number of groups ahead and most of us completed our rounds in around four hours & twenty minutes.  It was then back to The Phantom Bar for presentations & complimentary pizzas and French fries.

Our resident “Biker” Mogens Melander surprised us all with a magnificent 43 points and took first place for the very first time, with Adam Barton coming second on 40 points and John Pierrel finished third with 39.

1st Mogens Melander (35) 43pts

2nd Adam Barton (12) 40pts

3rd John Pierrel (13) 39pts

Near Pins: B3 – Graham Buckingham, C2 – John Pierrel.

Long Putts: B9 – Ian Pickles, C9 – Graham Buckingham.

Wednesday, August 19, Burapha C & D – Stableford

Sports Day at Burapha – 1,650 baht for green fee, caddy & cart – difficult to resist and so there were four groups of us that headed off to play this classy golf course and we were allocated the C & D nines much to our delight.

We welcomed Andre Van Dyk, Daryl Evans & Mick O’Brien, all from Tropical Golf who were playing with us for the first time.

Stuart Mann.

It was hot with a fairly stiff breeze as our first group teed off on C1 15 minutes early at 9.45am and with “traffic” in front of us at the start the going was slow but before too long we managed to play through the Thai five-ball immediately ahead which enabled us to set a really good pace.  The course was in fabulous condition as ever and provided an excellent day’s golf which was all over in the very good time of three hours & forty minutes.

For the second time this week Mogens Melander was the winner with 39 points, and I need to point out that this sometimes happens with someone who has just started to play the game off a high handicap but works really hard on the driving range and gets the early rewards.  Of course the handicap system will shortly catch up with him and he will settle down and probably have some scores similar to the rest of us, but in the meantime he is “making hay while the sun shines”.

Also getting his act together was Stuart Mann who surprised all, including himself, by coming in with 37 points for second spot and with 3 golfers on 36 points the resultant count back saw Mick O’Brien (24 point back nine) finished third from Christian Boysen (19 point back nine) and Andre Van Dyk (17 point back nine).

1st Mogens Melander (35) 39pts

2nd Stuart Mann (26) 37pts

3rd Mick O’Brien (19) 36pts

Near Pins: C5 – Ken Hole, D2 – Graham Buckingham.

Long Putts: C9 – Graham Buckingham, D9 – Christian Boysen.

Friday, August 21, Eastern Star – Stableford

Yours truly sat this one out and we had four groups for the game at Eastern Star on this fine, sunny day.  Welcomes were handed out to PSC Golf Chairman Maurice Roberts, Bob Watson & Brad Robins who were playing in general competition with us for the first time.

The golf course wasn’t busy and the first group teed off 15 minutes ahead of schedule at 9.45am.  The course was quite good although fairways were hard & dry but the greens were ok.  Most groups finished their rounds in about four hours.

Once again there was a first time winner with Stuart Mann carding 41 points and easily winning the competition.  Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge came second on 36 points and his partner Wan finished in third spot with 33.

1st Stuart Mann (26) 41pts

2nd Dick Braimbridge (36) 36pts

3rd Wan Makmul (33) 33pts

Near Pins: 3rd – Bob Watson, 17th – Wan Makmul

Long Putts: 9th – Stuart Mann, 18th – Stuart Mann
