PSC Golf from The Billabong Golf Bar

Monday, April 18, Phoenix Gold – Stableford

Phoenix on a day when it was not so hot, with a nice breeze blowing and making the conditions perfect for a great day out, and the scores from the 4 groups reflected that.  The course was in great condition with the greens being as fast as you can imagine, it is always a pleasure to play here.

We got away to an early start as there was nobody else on the course.  The scoring was exceptional with only 3 players not getting in the 30’s – points that is.  There was only one ‘2’ however, coming via a magic shot from Freddy Starbeck on the 8th hole.  Freddy got beaten on a count back for second place overall by Lloyd Shuttleworth, both with 38 points while first place went Graham Rice with a fine 39 points, a great round of golf indeed and thanks for the bell ring mate.

Miss Da and Miss Karn pose for a photo.

Our lads from Aussie made a good fist of it today but Michael’s 18 year old son hadn’t yet surfaced since he got to Pattaya!

Wednesday, April 20, Green Valley – Stableford

Thank goodness we are back to normal following the Songkran holiday but, unfortunately, so is the traffic along route 36 to and from Green Valley.

The eleven Billabong ladies standing on the 1st tee always add colour to the day’s activities but today they excelled themselves.  Dressed in Songkran shirts with every conceivable colour on display they certainly brightened up what started as a cloudy morning.  A pale disk of sun was in evidence to start the morning but the clouds took umbrage and gradually dissipated, leaving us with a bright sunny morning with a cooling breeze.

All the greens had been scarified but only half have been top dressed causing some inconsistencies for the unwary golfer.  Perhaps this was the reason that there was only one ‘2’ and that went to Jayden Stennett.  But one lady obviously had no problems with the greens or her golf in general.  Miss Da had 2 balls go OB and one ball in the water but overcame these minor setbacks to come out on top with 45 points, leaving everyone in her wake.  Miss Karn came second with 40 points and the consistent Miss Nu was third.

Many Billabong regulars disappeared to quieter climes during Songkran, reducing the number of men playing today to 20.  Lloyd Shuttleworth recorded 35 points to stand on the podium, being relegated to third by Keith Allen with 36 points.  With his booming drives, Graham ‘I haven’t been well’ Beaumont secured first place with 38 points despite his chipping expertise – or lack of it.

Although Graham was absent on our return to the Billabong he overcame our disappointment by requesting that Capt. Bob ring the bell, which went down well with those present.

Friday, April 22, Burapha – Stableford

When we arrived at Burapha today the car park was virtually empty but after we had paid our dues and went to find our bags the place was suddenly buzzing and we assumed we were going to be in for a slow day.  It was decided to play one 4-ball and two 5-balls but it turned out to be a reasonably quick round and we were finished in just a little over four hours.

The course was in great condition with fast green and some very good lies.  We had to play C and D today as A and B were closed for renovations.  It is always a pleasure depending on your preferences but I think the C and D loops are as good as you could play anywhere.

There were only three ‘2’s, coming from Lloyd Shuttleworth and Kevin Wild (2).  I might add that one person drove the 7th on the back nine to about 6 feet but missed the putt for his ‘2’ and eagle, bad luck mate.

Coming in third place today was Freddy Starbeck with a fine 39 points but he was overshadowed by Bob Philp who scored 41 points and Kevin Wild, who beat Bob with the same score but with a whopping 25 points on the back nine to edge the count back.  Hard to beat that!
