PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society
Monday, Nov. 2, Greenwood A & B – Stableford
It was a slow old trip to Greenwood, what with the crawl along Sukhumvit and then the roadworks on 331 but we arrived after a 62 minute drive and found the course to be fairly busy, as is to be expected with the current special prices: 1,150 baht for green fee, caddy & cart and 950 baht for walkers is terrific value, especially on this golf course which is invariably well presented.
With 5 groups on the start sheet we were allocated the A & B nines in that order and our first group got away just a little after our scheduled 10.00am tee time. The weather was great with very little wind although it did warm up somewhat towards the end of the round but the course was in good “nick” with the greens firm and true. The pace was fairly good and most of our groups got around in about four hours & 15 minutes.
Svend Hommel, Jeff Wylie, Nat Rukkid & Steve Truelove.
Our resident Biker Mogens Mellander returned to his top form and won the day with 40 points while 3-handicapper Mike Allidi shot an even par round to gain second spot with 39 points. There were 3 golfers with 38 points each and the resultant count back saw Svend Hommel Hansen (22 point back nine) finish third from Steve Truelove (21 point back nine) in fourth place. Having no trouble playing from his new handicap of 11, Christian Boysen (19 point back nine) came in fifth with the same score.
1st MogensMellander (29) 40pts
2nd Mike Allidi (3) 39pts
3rd SvendHommel Hansen (18) 38pts
4th Steve Truelove (6) 38pts
5th Christian Boysen (11) 38pts
Near Pins: A6 – Christian Boysen, B2 – Steve Truelove
Long Putts: A9 – Peter Blackburn, B9 – Dick Braimbridge
Wednesday, Nov. 4, Mt. Shadow – Phantom Golf Cup
There was a fantastic response for the 6th Phantom Golf Cup as we had 65 players signed up and with the weather looking good we were looking forward to a great day with an earlier than usual first tee time of 9.00am.
With a low gross prize up for grabs this month there was keen interest shown by the low handicappers and the first group consisted of Jeff (H/cap 5), Bob (2), Jack (3) and Steve (6) and they produced some very fine golf on the day with just 2 strokes separating the four of them at the end. The rest of the groups followed and things went extremely smoothly with everyone showing up on time (well almost) and the last group teed off just 2 minutes later than scheduled – a great effort with 17 groups.
Mogens Mellander.
The weather was fabulous although it did get hot towards the end and the golf course was in terrific shape with the greens better than most had seen them for a long time, so hats off to Mountain Shadow for producing a lovely course for us. All groups moved well and after the first group came in after four hours & ten minutes the others followed in quick succession.
In addition to the low gross prize we had 2 flights with A Flight for handicaps 0 to 16, playing stroke off the blue tees and B Flight for golfers with handicaps of 17 to 36 playing stableford off the white tees and there were four places in each flight. We also had a prize for the best ladies score and there were technical prizes for both flights on all holes – 9 for A Flight & 9 for B Flight.
Jeff Wylie took out the low gross award with a fine 73 off his 5 handicap but there were a few others snapping at his heels, namely Steve (74), Bob (75) & Jack (75).
The A Flight was easily won by big Steve Truelove with a net 68 and there were 3 golfers on net 71 involved in a count back for the next three places: Bill McGarvie (net 36 back nine) got the nod for second place with Mike Allidi (net 37 back nine) finishing third and Peter Hynard (net 40 back nine) came fourth.
It was an outstanding effort by 79-year old Svend Hommel, who plays off an eighteen handicap, to win the B Flight with a magnificent 45 points. Nick Shaw finished second with a great 43, Ken Grimes was third with 39 and with two players on 38 points the resultant count back determined that Dick Braimbridge (24 points on the back nine) finished fourth, with Dave Lehane (19 points on the back nine) just missing out.
The Ladies Flight was well won by Nat Rukkid with 36 points.
It had been one of the best monthly tournaments with an excellent field and some great golf played on a fine golf course. We had a great buffet meal back at the Phantom Bar and thanks to Alex from the Dania Hotel for that and also many thanks to Christian Boysen of the Phantom Bar for sponsoring the event. We would also wish to thank Ali Baba Restaurant, Crown of India Restaurant, Colin’s Golf Bar and Hotel Dania for helping us with sponsorship.
Next month’s tournament will be on Wednesday, December 2 at a venue yet to be decided.
