This Sunday the Lewiinski’s golf society was given the opportunity to play the St. Andrews layout as there was a Singha sponsored golf event being played at our usual Green Valley. The course was in excellent condition and weather was a tad cooler with a little breeze, which made it a pleasure to play.

The conditions certainly suited Mogens Melander down to the ground as he won his first ever event playing with Lewiinski’s. Mogens took the laurels in B Flight and was the man of the match with a sizzling 40 points. The second and third podium places went to a count back between Ian Wilson and John Dearden, who we don’t get to see very often. If John had not no-scored the first hole it could have been a different outcome but the scales of justice leaned in Ian’s favour.
There was plenty of drama in the senior flight as two players carded excellent 39 point totals, which saw Phil ‘the Welsh wonder’ Davies edge Aussie superstar Nick Odnoral for the flight gold.
The calculator was out again as two players were tied on 31; the bitter pill of defeat being left for Adam Barton to swallow as his back nine 14 was insufficient to garner the podium bronze step. The count back winner was new Lewiinski’s member Russell Hall who hails from Melbourne and plays his golf at the Keybourgh Golf Club. I think you will hear a lot more of Russell.
Monday, August 24, Khao Kheow – Stableford
1st Ed Wyckoff (13) 31pts
2nd Mike Jefferys (14) 31pts
3rd Kevin Rogers (13) 27pts
A smallish group traveled to one of my favourite courses in the area Khao Kheow. There is just one small gripe concerning the card here; the white tees measure out at a little over 5,800yds, which is basically a blown up pitch and putt, while the yellows are placed at around 6,400yds. This is a rather large disparity that plays into the hands of any ringers you might have. My suggestion is if you want to play golf over a 5,800yrd course then get a ladies handicap and play of the red tees.
To be expected then the scores were on the low side today but Ed ‘Our man in the White House’ Wyckoff played some good stuff in patches, as did flight mate Mike ‘the Welsh dragon’ Jeffreys as their 31 point rounds were good for a share of the man of the match honours. Aussie star Kevin Rogers rounded out the flight with head bent on 27 points.
Wednesday, August 26, Burapha B & C – Stableford
1st Russell Hall (15) 38 pts
2nd Peter Henshaw (26) 37 pts
3rd Jim Elphick (6) 33 pts
The Lewiinski’s gang headed out to take on the demanding Burapha B & C nines playing from the white tees, which seemed to be set back and scoring was at a premium.
Only two players bettered their handicap – as foretold by gypsy George Jackson earlier in the week, Aussie star Russell Hall picked up his first win out of Lewiinski’s with a man of the match 38 points while Peter ‘no nick name’ Henshaw followed Russell up the podium steps a shot in arrears.
Three players were log-jammed on 33 points and when the jam was unknotted it was Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick who got to fill the final podium position, leaving both Peter Moon and Co. Tipperary’’ man John Feehan at sea level and potless.
