Tuesday, Jan. 31, Green Valley B & C – Monthly Mug/Stroke
The last game of every month is our regular medal comp for the Mug and also the time we announce the golfer of the month. It always draws a good crowd of players and this day was no exception.
Greenwood is always a good course and we were soon away on B1 and playing into a strong wind that was to plague us all day. The course was in good condition and the greens were fast and true, if a bit hairy. It was clear ahead and we were able to move at a good pace.
Back at BJ’s it was soon into the results and in the Monthly Mug we had a runaway winner when Deryl Neufeld came in with a great net 63 to win by a street. In second was Dick Warberg with a net 70 and in third came Daryl Evans with a net 71. We then had a many person count back on net 72 that saw Don Carmody in fourth, Landis Brooks fifth, John Davies sixth and Bob Watson in seventh.
The low front nine score went to Gordon Clegg with net 34 and the low back nine to Joseph Buschberger with net 33.
The golfer of the month award was won in a canter by Dave Cooper who excelled throughout January, so well done to him.
Near Pins: Bob Watson, Graham Buckingham, John Davis, Joseph Buschberger.
Long Putts: Andy Murphy, Don Carmody.
Friday, Feb. 3, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
A new golfer of the month contest began on Friday and everyone wanted to be off to a good start. Twenty seven hopefuls headed out to this fine course and Royal Lakeside was in its usual excellent condition. The course seems easy but it is trickier than a first glance might suggest.
Usually comments about the weather are about how hot or rainy it was, but this day was about as perfect as Thailand can get. Cool, slight breeze to keep the bugs down, and cloudy. On such days walking is not only easy but a pleasure. Though not a cakewalk, RL is one of the most forgiving courses and the scores – one in particular – showed people can take advantage.
Brian Parish (c/h 14) won A Flight with a lofty 42 points but can you believe his total wasn’t the best score of the day by 6 strokes? Next came Brian Sams (6) with 38 points off his small handicap, followed by Landis Brooks (10) with 37, edging out Brian Gabe on count back.
Deryl Neufeld (22) blasted away all competition in B Flight with an incredible 48 points! Deryl was on a roll having won the Monthly Mug on Tuesday. Torsten Bischoff (30) picked up- second spot with an excellent 40 points, but still an incredible 8 strokes behind the winner. At least Torsten doesn’t have to torture himself worrying about that putt that lipped out. Last of the best was Dick Warberg (22) with 39 points, edging out steady Dave Cooper.
The best front and back nines (non-winners) came from Dave Cooper and Daryl Evans.
Near Pins: Brian Sams (2), Brian Parish, Mashi, Torsten Bischoff, Daryl Evans.
Long Putts: John Davis, Barry Elphick.
