The Pattaya Links Golf Society
Monday, April 3, Bangpakong – Stableford
1st New Satita (20) 43pts
2nd Steve Trulove (9) 40pts
3rd John Chelo (21) 39pts
4th Gary Bolger (19) 39pts
Best front 9: Bob Watson
Best back 9: John Mason
This particular Monday started as a bright, sunny day when 18 golfers set out from Links Bar for the trip to Bangpakong Riverside. It’s a slightly longer trip than most courses we play, but in our mini bus we had an easy and pleasant trip up Route 7.
This course was described by another writer as “a feel good course” and so it is. As this scribe had a disastrous day at another unnamed course on Saturday, I needed to get back some confidence, and Bangpakong provided that.
We have had 2 trips here recently and on each occasion found the course in immaculate condition. All comments afterwards were nothing but positive, fairways with good lies, rough not too rough and greens that were not crazy fast and ran true.
Last time here we had a rush of 40 plus points. Today there was only two. New Satita, still in great form, ran away with it by 3 points from Steve Truelove, also having a good run lately while third place was decided by count back, with John Chelo edging out Gary Bolger.
Only 2 near pins today (someone forgot to take the markers from the bar), but only one of them was claimed, that being taken by Takeshi Hakozaki.
Wednesday, April 5, Pattana A & B – Stableford
A Flight
1st Phil Davies (11) 42pts
2nd Huw Philips (14) 41pts
B Flight
1st Frank Riley (23) 42pts
2nd PJ Mitchell (21) 39pts
Do you ever take the time to stop and look around at the scenery of the golf course on which you are standing? While waiting on the B9 Fairway at Pattana Golf Club the panorama was spectacular. Bridges adorned with draped flowering shrubs, a fountain in the lake and green fairways into the distance. Swivel around and see behind the green, the grand clubhouse.
Here was the venue for our April Links Cup and 38 players, including once again a contingent from Bunker Boys Society, came to try their luck at snaring some of the 22 prizes on offer. There were many winners on the day, some lucky (or good enough) managed 2 prizes each. Adam Barton is now the proud owner of the keg of beer from sponsor Touch Agogo in LK Metro for a nearest the pin (3rd shot) on the par-5 B9.
The weather was kind today and together with a course in splendid condition some good scores were turned in. The A Flight winner Phil Davies set a new personal best gross score of 77, bettering his previous best of 78 and was also one of those to grab 2 of the technical prizes. Joy was happy to help open the envelopes.
B Flight winner, Frank Riley, age 70 something, could not remember ever having 25 points for 9 holes, so again this was a first. He also finished with 42 points overall to match Phil’s score.
Huw Philips ran a close second to Phil in A Flight with 41 points while in B Flight, PJ Mitchell recorded 39 for the silver.
Having 2 winners on 42 points, who got wear the Green Jacket? Phil Davies decided that since we already have a photo of him wearing it, the honour would be handed to Frank Riley. The lowest score for the day and new wearer of ‘the wig’ was Niels Peters.
