Monday, July 29, Green Valley (white tees) – Monthly Medal

A Flight

1st Mike Newbert (9) net 65

2nd Paul Greenaway (8) net 69

3rd John McHugh (10) net 71

B Flight

1st Michael Hastie (22) net 73

2nd Chicka Smith (16) net 76

We have our Monthly Medal at the end of every month and this was the turn of our regular Monday venue Green Valley to play host to another full sheet of Pattaya’s finest golfers.  We always have a good turnout for this comp and today was no exception.

The B Flight was an all Aussie affair, with Mum letting Chicka out to play with the lads as he has been a good boy of late.  Chicka managed a 76 net off his 16 handicap, but Michael Hastie topped the flight with a fine 73 off of his 22 handicap.

Mr. Monthly Medal - Mike Newbert.Mr. Monthly Medal – Mike Newbert.

As for the long hitters, it wasn’t even close.  After many wins this summer and several excellent rounds of golf, Mike Newbert finally got the timing right for his first Monthly Medal.  His orchid Antigua shirt freshly monogrammed for history, the Montauk Mauler turned in a great 65 to win by 4 strokes.  Paul “Take it Easy” Greenaway has also been playing some great golf lately and his net 69 today brought him second place honours.

There was a shock when I read the results sheet to see an old familiar name in 3rd.  Our TGC partner John McHugh snuggled in with a 71 on his card and helped ease the frustration of his last few efforts on the course.

McHugh couldn’t be with us for the presentation as he was packing for a once-in-a-lifetime golf journey to Scotland and Ireland for 3 weeks of golf in the other kingdom, The Kingdom of Fife!  You lads have fun out there, it’s a different game without the palm trees.

Tuesday, July 30, Siam Plantation (white tees) – Stableford

1st John Mulrooney (13) 34pts

2nd Mike Newbert (9) 32pts

3rd Phil Smedley (10) 31pts

3rd Nigel Flanagan (12) 31pts

So I get this call around 10 o’clock on Monday night … “Steve, would ya have a slot for me tomorrow?  I’m desperate for a game!”  “Sure Johnny, welcome back mate.” and so fresh off the plane steps John (Sean) Mulrooney with all the luck of the Irish and just goes out and blows away the field to top the podium on this very tricky golf course.

Nobody shot their handicap today and the conditions were a bit damp as we played the back 9 in the rain.  But then Sean knows a bit about playing in the rain as he caddied for Darren Clarke when he won The Open at Royal St. George’s in 2011.  Good shootin’ pal!

Monday’s Medal winner Mike Newbert was 2 shots back to take sole second and post yet another good solid round of golf.

Third place had to be shared by our fearless Golf Captain Phil Smedley, who kicked everybody’s tail last week, and Nigel Flanagan, who also managed a 31 on the card.  Nigel just had a birthday, so facebook him your gift certificates please.

Even in the damp the course was fantastic:  the Tuesday Sports Day rate of 2,400 baht is well worth paying for such a great track.  Don’t forget that P.S.C. Golf Chairman Joe Mooneyham has Siam Plantation scheduled for Thursday August 15th, so sign up by August 11th to avoid disappointment.  There will be 5 flights, great food at the course, and tons of prizes!

Thursday, August 1, Phoenix Mountain & Lake (white tees) – Stableford

1st Henry O’Brien (19) 36pts

2nd Mike Newbert (9) 35pts

3rd Neil Hull (16) 34pts

We were off on that short jaunt down the road to Phoenix to start off the month of August with a bang.  There were overcast skies so we were treated to a dry and cool day which was perfect for a good walk spoiled.

There was a full sheet of golfers for the comp as Phoenix is one of the more popular venues we have on the schedule, and the Sports Day rate of 1,100 is great value.  We forget how lucky we are and thanks should be given to Mike Mesommonta (from Burapha) and the gentlemen of the E.G.A. for providing us with this fantastic summer promotion.

Neil Hull had a good day on the course and his 34 points was enough for sole 3rd place.  The story of the week was Mike Newbert and with a win on Monday, a 2nd on Tuesday and a 2nd here today he was the golfer of the week.  Well played Mikey!

Today, though, belonged to that legendary Scottish golfer Henry O’Brien.  He was the only man to equal his handicap on the day and jumps to the top of the podium to stake a claim to those Handsome Man vouchers that Cap’t. Phil hands out.  Thanks to all for joining us this week.

Note:  The Golf Club is located on Soi LK Metro.  We try to schedule summer “Sports Days”, so come join us for a seriously fun day out.  Just call 085 434 3377 or see our website www.golfclubpattaya .com and for more information mail us: pattaya4golf@gmail. com and see updates at www. facebook.com/golfclubpattaya… all handicaps welcome!
