PSC Golf from The Golf Club
Monday, Sept. 22, Green Valley (white tees) – Stableford
1st Terry Dyer (15) 40pts
T2nd Sandy Bennie (18) 35pts
T2nd Kim Scadden (18) 35pts
The Boomtown Rats wouldn’t be singing “I don’t like Mondays” if they had been playing Green Valley lately. We really do like Mondays for the last who knows how long as the course continues to be the most played and in the best condition of just about anywhere. If only Sir Bob took to the links to join us here at TGC!
Greg, Phil & Stan after Friday’s golf.
Weather: perfect, Course: perfect, Scores: well, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad! Terry Dyer from Kiwiland was the only bloke to beat his handicap and his 40 points was 4 better than his score here last week to climb to the top of the pile for 1st place. Well done mate!
Wednesday, Sept. 24, Pattavia Century (white tees) – Stableford
1st Steve Ellison (18) 36pts
2nd Terry Dyer (15) 34pts
3rd Phil Smedley (10) 32pts
The weather was looking a bit dicey on the drive out today. Blustery, dark clouds were swirling all around but the attention was drawn to the near perfect road to the course as more of it has gotten paved lately. Those axle busting potholes are a thing of the past now.
All in a day’s work, Phil bagged his 1st ‘Ace’ last week.
Shane and the lads at the P.A.G.S. comp were also out there today and it was nice to see so many familiar faces out at this lovely golf course. Shane runs an excellent tournament and he had a full card of golfers for this very popular monthly event.
We had 3 groups out today and were full of anticipation to see how Pattavia has improved since we were here last, just 3 weeks ago. Aside from some sort of disease on the back of the 18th green, the golf course was in good nick and those greens are becoming the stuff of legend here in Pattaya golf circles. On some positions on the green, a downhill putt can become unstoppable and a 4-putt is not out of the question. The many crowned greens can hide a tremendous break, so pace and angle combine to make this the most challenging test of putting in Pattaya. This is also the best value for money course in Pattaya at the moment.
The day was purring along nicely and aside from a slight wait at the turn, we had no hold ups other than the usual 4th par-3. Having the welcoming drinks stop there silenced any thoughts of complaints. The back nine saw us make the turn just under the 2-hour mark.
All was going to plan when at the 16th the wind started to pick up quickly and those charcoal clouds we witnessed on the way in had now become of Biblical intensity looming over the 17th tee box. It all became a game of balance as a 30 mph wind made stance a test and we rushed to get to the clubhouse before the inevitable downpour. As we finished the 18th, put the clubs in the van and just got to the clubhouse, those clouds opened up right on cue.
Looking back at the results sheet, this writer found his 36 points were enough to snag first place from some of the real golfers out there. After making a few good chips followed by a few good putts, it ended up being the best round in a few years. Like they say, every dog has his day!
Friday, Sept. 26, Khao Kheow (white tees) – Stableford
1st Phil Smedley (10) 36pts
2nd Greg Gawron (17) 34pts
3rd Stan Buchan (0) 32pts
Khao Kheow is in the best shape it has been in a long time. Everyone raved about the course and we will definitely be going out there more over the high season. The layout by Pete Dye has always been great, but sometimes keeping the rough down in the rainy season gets to be difficult. That is not a problem now.
Today was Cap’t. Phil’s last round before he heads off to the homeland for a well deserved break before high season. It must have been on the agenda to go out with a bang and so it was he took first by shooting his handicap and the win by a comfortable 2 strokes.
Fellow Aussies Greg Gawron and Stan Buchan were just behind for 2nd and 3rd slots to complete the Antipodean Podium.
