Combine clear skies and a light breeze, with a golf course in great shape and what do you get? The 2nd PAGS tournament of the year, at Royal Lakeside is clearly the answer. February’s PAGS tournament was truly on a winner from the get go, the only thing needed was some eager golfers to enjoy the day. Shane and his team had seen to that, with some 98 golfers spread over the 4 divisions, including 9 ladies.
Last year there were some truly outstanding scores at this venue when PAGS held their tournament here, but this year those great scores were thinner on the ground, maybe the course was playing a little tougher.
A smiling Mark Sherwood with Scott.
One of the strengths of PAGS is that the numerous sponsors offer technical prizes on every hole, as well as 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each of the 3 men’s flights and 1st & 2nd available to the ladies that teed it up on this day.
One of the stars of the day, making his first appearance at a PAGS tournament, was Mark Sherwood, playing off 2 handicap, who knocked up winning technical prizes, but admitted to a lapse in concentration, letting his round slip a little over the last few holes. PAGS policy of each player winning a maximum of 2 technical prizes means any excesses go into the “lucky draws” which was the case on this day.
Paul McNally shows some winning form.
Paul McNally was arguably the shiniest star of the day, winning the Low Gross with 76, then edging Gerd Riedler & Jeff Wylie for 3rd spot in the A flight, plus picking up a couple of technicals. There were several other multiple prize winners on the day, but generally it could be said that the prizes were shared around amongst many well satisfied players.
Andre Olsson (7) was the A flight winner with a solid 38 points, ahead of Lars Vesterlund (10) with 37, while the count back decided third spot.
B flight held the best scores of the day, and it was a count back which decided the winner after David Gibson (15) & Mashi Kaneta (15) both signed for 41 points, David edging Mashi 20/19, while Werner (15) got the bronze spot with 39 points.
The C flight required count backs also, with Randy Flello (18) getting the nod 20/17 over (24) marker Jan Johansson, while Ronny Walfridson (25) pipped John Andersson 19/17, after both signed for 37 points.
The Ladies flight was clear cut, with winner Supatra Dulkys (26) scoring a fine 39 points, while the best of the rest with 32 points was Yuza Phaohom (25).
PAGS continues to enjoy great support, with the free BBQ at Shenanigans becoming a fine social event in its own right, family and friends all come along to support the players. This month’s tournament will be held at Crystal Bay on 26th March at a cost of 1600 Baht inclusive of green & caddy fee, competition & BBQ at Shenanigans Jomtien. It will again be popular, so early registration with Shane on 085 945 9689 is recommended.
