Sunday, Dec. 13, St. Andrews – Monthly Medal

Today we were moved over to St. Andrews from our usual Green Valley slot as there was another tournament on there again this week.  I don’t know what has happened to the weather this year but today it was extremely hot and most of our players found it uncomfortable for golf, it was more like April than December, hot and very humid.

It was our monthly medal today and for many of our players St Andrews is a daunting course to play medal competition.  However, as it turned out we got some excellent scores despite the heat and the course.

In A Flight we had two players who shot level par but even that was not good enough to win the medal.  Barry Wellings shot level par seventy four and a net sixty nine but had to settle for second place as he was beaten on the count back by Allan Parker who won the medal.  Alan also had a net sixty nine for what I think was his first outright win with us despite the fact that he plays with us every Sunday.  Well done Allan, you picked the right day to do it!

Paul Smith also shot level par for a net seventy two off his 2-handicap but this only got him third place today.  Garry Barling had a net seventy four for fourth place and Garry kept Paul Pavloff, who also had a net seventy four, out of the prizes on the count back.

John Chambers.

In The B Flight the scoring was not quite as good with only one man beating his handicap, this being John Beshoff who was playing his last game with us before going back to Ireland for Xmas and had a net seventy three to take the win.  In second place was Norman Cheetham with a net seventy seven, third went to Vincent Gras on a net seventy eight and in fifth spot was Serge Straten also on net seventy eight.

A Flight

1st Allan Parker (11) net 69

2nd Barry Wellings (5) net 69

3rd Paul Smith (2) net 72

4th Garry Barling (8) net 74

B Flight

1st John Beshoff (16) net 73

2nd Norman Cheetham (16) net 77

3rd Vincent Gras net 78

4th Serge Straeten (17) net 78

2’s:  Barry Wellings, Paul Smith.

Tuesday, Dec. 15, Pattavia – Stableford

Today we made the slightly longer trip up to Pattavia to find the course very quiet and we had it mostly to ourselves, which meant that we could get around quickly and that is the way we like it.

Allan Parker.

It was slightly cooler today than Sunday but still hot for this time of year.  The course was in very good condition and with its tricky and very fast greens it was no surprise that only two of our group managed to play to their handicaps.

John Chambers, who has been playing very good golf on this trip, was the winner today with thirty six points, beating John Fenwick into second on the count back.  We then had two players on thirty three points with Dale Walton coming third on the count back and Russell Gilroy had to settle for fourth.

1st John Chambers (9) 36pts

2nd John Fenwick (20) 36pts

3rd Dale Walton (5) 33pts

4th Russell Gilroy (16) 33pts

Thursday, Dec. 17, Khao Kheow – Stableford

Today we were back at what is I think the best course in the area, Khao Kheow, where we played the A and B nines, the best combination.  We had a smaller group out, this year is still very quiet with not so many golfers around and it is also very evident on all the courses, today being no exception and there were very few on the course.

Garry Barling was playing his last game with us for this year and he finished just as he started by taking the win with thirty five points.  Garry’s friend Dale Walton was also playing his last game with us for this year and he also had thirty five points but lost the count back to Garry and had to settle for second place.  Both Garry and Dale have played very good every time they played with us and they will be missed.

Jon Batty came third with thirty three points and Donal Lyne, who had just arrived from Ireland that morning and went straight out to golf, still managed to score thirty points and come fourth.

1st Garry Barling (8) 35pts

2nd Dale Walton (5) 35pts

3rd Jon Batty (7) 33pts

4th Donal Lyne (14) 30pts
