It was time to feel good about our game, and what better way to do it than having a day out at the Sunday configured Green Valley “lay-in” (it’s a “lay-out” on the week days.) There is no better way to improve your game than to play an easier course – it’s sort of an “ends” justifying the means” type deal.
Sunday’s winners: Ed Wyckoff (left) and Pat Reagan.
Well the lads and lasses kindly obliged, firing one 46, a 41, a 40 and five 38’s. You have to go to the lingerie shop across from the plastic surgeons office to see those kinds of numbers.
But lest the efforts of the winners be diminished, you have to realize that many in the big Sunday field did not fare so well. So it’s hats off to the man of the match, Irishman Pat Regan, who had the 46 point output and it could have been a lot better as Pat stood on forty points after 14 holes. Unfortunately for him the wheels then fell off as he made three double bogies on the trot but he still won the B Flight at a canter and he also picked up a 2.
Pat was six clear of Pierre ‘the magician’ Bietry while Christian Boysen closed the flight podium, gaining a count back decision over Jum Karagit, Bruce Walters and John Ianson.
Nick Shaw.
Ed ‘our man in the White house’ Wyckoff led the A Flight players into the barn with a very creditable 41 points. Big hitting Dave Boran lifted the silver with38 points and Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw tided up the flight as he edged the speechless Freddy Starbeck on count back.
Ian Pickles, Pierre Bietry, Colin Davis, Jim Bell and Jorn Finnerup shared the 2’s pot with Pat.
Tuesday, April 29, Bangpra – Stableford
A Flight
1st Peter Henshaw (16) 38pts
2nd Laurie McBride (14) 38pts
3rd Ian Pickles (13) 37pts
B Flight
1st Tore Eliassen (17) 37pts
2nd Mick Coghlan (21) 36pts
3rd Barry Oats (19) 35pts
It was back to old favorite Bangpra on Tuesday to battle the lightning fast greens and anywhere above the hole usually meant a three or four-putt on the card.
The day’s honours were shared between two of Ireland’s favourite sons, Peter ‘the silver surfer’ and Laurie ‘the Irish rover’, both in A Flight and each with best of the day 38 point scores. The sharing came to an end however when the count back handed the bigger bag of loot to Peter. Ian Pickles closed the flight with a very good 37 points, plus he took home the ‘2’s pot.
Tore ‘the quite one’ Eliaseen briefly became the Baron of Bangpra as his 37 points nipped his B Flight buddies, Mick Coghlan by a single counter and Barry Oats by two.
Wednesday, April 30, St. Andrews – Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (12) 39pts
2nd Nick Shaw (14) 38pts
3rd Freddy Starbeck (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Alistair gall (22) 33pts
2nd Jim Elphick (20) 32pts
3rd Christian Boysen (17) 31pts
The fear that St Andrews strikes in the golfer’s heart and the fact that Wednesday is our back to back outings contributed to a smaller crowd than usual for this fixture. However, the field still warranted two flights and that was just fine for the man riding a purple patch, Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff, who made his second pay-window trip this week with a rock solid 39 points. Ed was one stroke clear of Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw and a further stoke clear of Freddy ‘the quite one’ Starbeck.
B Flight was the province of Alistair Gall on this day with a one point victory over Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick. Jim was one ahead of Christian Boysen and Bruce Walters and Christian, as he has done so often, wrenched the third place money from Bruce under the guise of count back.
Ed Wyckoff made it a day to remember as he slotted in the only 2 of the day.
Congratulations to Peter Henshaw as he took the golfer of the month award for April from under the noses of the Danish duo with only three points separating them.
Friday, May 2, Pattavia Century – Stableford
A Flight
1st Nick Shaw (14) 36pts
2nd Laurie McBride (14) 35pts
3rd Bill Steinman (10) 34pts
B Flight
1st Eddy Beilby (17) 37pts
2nd Jonathan Fortis (16) 34pts
3rd Christy Knight (24) 32pts
Although Friday’s traffic can be a challenge, the risk is always worth it to play a most enjoyable and value for money event at Pattavia Century.
B Flight’s Eddy ‘the Eagle’ Beilby was the man of the match as he was the only player to better his handicap. Eddy’s 37 points was three clear of Jonathan Fortis while Christy ‘good’ Knight picked up the bronze a further two strokes back.
Nick ‘Elvis’ Shaw made it three pay-window visits this week with a steady even par return to top the A Flight. Ireland’s Laurie McBride and Bill Steinman trailed Nick up the podium steps by one digit increments and in that order.
Kevin Waycott, a brace, Nick Shaw, Peter Godfrey, Tom Gorey and Jonathan Fortis shared the ‘2’s pot.
