Monday, Dec. 22, Khao Kheow – Stroke/Monthly Mug

Stroke events, which are notoriously difficult, had the head green-keeper at Khao Kheow salivating like a cannibal watching short sighted plump missionaries disembarking from a canoe, as he observed our efforts to conquer his battleground.

Pre-game change room chatter included Wayco, who had eye surgical procedures recently, advising he could set a course record, however he wasn’t sure at which end.

(L-R): John Anderson, Patrick Poussier and Sal Brizzi.(L-R): John Anderson, Patrick Poussier and Sal Brizzi.

A bumper field of thirty six punters faced the starter who sent us on our way playing the B and C nines in that order.

The wind was so strong on the first nine it blew the pricks off the perimeter barb wire fence.  It abated somewhat on the flip side.  The course was in good condition with the greens as smooth as a crimpiline suit, however downhill putts were quicker than Aussie foreplay.

Patrick Poussier, playing great golf in the conditions, won the monthly mug by shooting ninety off the rod, which from his twenty three handicap equated to a net sixty seven.

In the A grade. Sal Brizzi continued his good form with a net seventy one while Mike Gosden handed in a seventy two and Kevin Waycott was absolutely delighted to have a gross score of 41/42 (83) and a net seventy four to take third place.  His previous stroke round was a world war two score, out in 39 and back in 45.  Don Richardson was fourth with a net seventy six.

In B grade, Alain Taddei showed the way on net seventy three, closely followed by Mashi Kaneta on seventy four while Fred Cuypers and Rita Zobeli, both with net seventy seven, made the podium.

In the C grade, despite staggering down the stretch like a Soi six sot, John Anderson handed in net seventy two to take first place which included a no lakey five-putt nine on the last hole.  Nolan Wise with net seventy three and Mark Henkel and Thomas Cotton on seventy four rounded it out.

Near pins went to Peter Bye on B3 and C8 with Rita Zobeli on B8 and John Davis C3 completing the set.

Long first putts were won by Dave Fletcher on B9 and Mike Gosden on C9.

The Coveted Compass Cap was snavelled by Martin Kempton who commented, “I didn’t play golf, it was more like an adventure,” and his net 95 confirmed same.
