Near Pins: No 5 Ed Wyckoff, No 8 Dave Driscoll, No 12 Phil Mather, No16 Paul Smith

With the wind blowing as hard today as it has for the past few weeks, it was not surprising that the competitors found scoring difficult.  Paul ‘junior’ Smith led home the A Flight boys and the field with a superb 41 points.  Yong Pat Reagan followed Paul up the podium steps with a sparkling 39 points while Simon Kendal, non-member Mark Wilson, Barry ‘the boot’ Copestake and JP Gasser all tied on 36 points, with Simon getting the nod in the count back.

Paul Smith.Paul Smith.

Bryan Frangman out-counted Dave Driscoll for the gold in B Flight; pity he was a non-member so the count back was to no avail, both on 39 points.  A count back was required to sort out the minor flight places as Norman ‘I never’ Cheatham edged William Peach for the bronze.

Ed Junger carried the flag in C Flight with 36 points and he was trailed in one stroke increments by Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer and Peter Terry.

Paul Smith (a brace) and five other players shared the 2’s pot.

2nd Peter Kelly (12) 33pts

3rd Bert Ulrich (11) 32pts

B Flight

C Flight

1st Peter Henshaw (20) 35pts

2nd Thierry Temime (23) 31pts

3rd Mike Jefferys (18) 27pts

Bangpra is always a tough test of golf as the scores today would indicate.  B Flight’s Chris Stephenson and Jim Reilly were the only two players to better their handicaps, both on 37 points with Chris receiving the gold in the count back.  The Donkey trotted off with the bronze after returning an even par round.

The laurels in A Flight went to Paul Bray with 35 points.  Peter Kelly lifted the silver with 33 as Bert Ulrich rounded out the flight on 32 after out-pointing Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff.

Dropping down to C Flight we saw Peter Henshaw atop the podium on 35 points.  Thierry Temime stood on the silver spot as Mike Jefferys, Bruce Berlin and Jan-Roger Ulriksen were log-jammed on 27 points; Mike used all his trickery to emerge with the last podium spot.

Peter Henshaw (a brace) and Jim Reilly shared a healthy 2’s pot

Friday, Jan. 2, Crystal Bay C & A – Stableford

A Flight

1st Bert Ulrich (11) 36pts

3rd Les Cobban (7) 35pts

B Flight

1st Mike Jefferys (18) 36pts

C Flight

1st Christy Knight (23) 38pts

2nd Barry Oats (24) 37pts

3rd Mick Coghlan (22) 35pts

It is no surprise when a quality player wins at Crystal Bay and this again proved the case as Christy’ good’ Knight used his full bag of clubs to squeeze out a solid 38 points and take the man of the match and C Flight honours.  Barry Oats was a shot back as he took the silver, with Mick Coghlan closing the flight podium on 35 points.

In A Flight, Bert Ulrich bettered his Tuesday third place finish to win on 36 points but he needed the aid of a count back to better Paul ‘junior’ Smith.  Les Cobban did the same to Paul Bray to close the flight.

Mike Jefferys led the way in B Flight with 36 points; Mike was one clear of David Wilcox and one more clear of Jimmy Carr.

Four players shared the 2’s pot.
