Lightning does strike twice if you are Paul ‘junior’ Smith, as he duplicated his previous Sunday feat of an A Flight win and co-man of the match honours with a splendid 42 points, which relates to a 71 gross of the stick. Paul, who has won seemingly every major competition in Pattaya over his long and distinguished involvement in the Eastern seaboard golf, was two points clear of Christian Boysen while Walter Panichi and Dave Stockman both had 39 point returns, with the former prevailing on the dreaded count back.
Sunday winner Paul Smith (left) with Peter Henshaw.
B Flight was headed by the co-man of the match David Dunne with his splendid 42 points. The Donkey slid in for the silver (hee-haw ways does) and Welsh man Phil Davies need the aid of a count back decision to take home the bronze from Norman “I never” Cheetham.
Bruce Berlin, who has shown well whenever he plays at Lewiinski’s, did so again today as his 39 points took the C Flight top podium rung. Don ‘the ladies man’ Lehmer took the silver with an even par round and left the lower podium step to be sorted out by count back between Jack Mouly and Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw, with Jack snatching the last spot while Peter was left propping up the bar.
Six players shared an excellent ‘2’s pot.
The golfer of the year was announced as Freddy Starbeck with 290 points. Runner up was Colin Davis with 276 and in third was Peter Henshaw on 239.

2nd Henktor Braak (23) 37pts
3rd Peter Henshaw (20) 33pts
Christmas & New Year celebrations over, a large contingent set off for the exciting Khao Kheow course, which always produces exciting scores and destroys a few handicaps. This visit was to be no exception and despite the windy conditions and fast greens, Irishman Ed Delaney shot the day’s best score with an amazing 41 points off his 29 handicap to top C Flight. Henktor Braak found himself in an Irish sandwich with his 37 points as Peter ‘the silver surfer’ Henshaw closed the flight with 33 points.
Lewiinski’s golfer of the year – Freddy Starbeck.
In B Flight, Bruce Berlin continued to find his form as he took top spot with 37 points. The Donkey, who himself has been on a bit of gallop of late, picked up the silver with an even par round and David Dunne rounded out the flight with 34.
In the flight where the boys can really play the game it was “our man in the White House” Ed Wyckoff who stood atop the podium with a fine40 points. Peter ‘fluent in Thai’ Hynard followed Ed closely up the podium steps with 38 points as Les Cobban tided up the flight with 36.
In the 2’s competition the pot was won by Walter Panechi who will no doubt savor his moment of glory.
Tuesday, Jan. 6, Burapha – Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (16) 39pts
2nd Norman Cheetham (15) 36pts
3rd Thomas Lindquist (13) 36pts
B Flight
1st Martin Allard (24) 37pts
2nd Mick fox (24) 34pts
3rd Thierry Temime (23) 33pts
On the always difficult A & B course at Burapha, the Donkey kept a talented field at bay by recording a splendid 39 points to stand atop the A Flight podium and receive the man of the match Blue Ribbon. Norman “I never” Cheetham, Thomas Lindquist and Francis Goyons had to be separated by a count back which Norman had the best of. Thomas was happy to stand on the podium while poor Francis was left at sea level and potless.
B Flight was the domain of Martin Allard who shot a steady 37 points and was three clear of Mick Fox in second. The bronze went to a count back and saw Thierry Temime edge Jim off the podium altogether and send him to join Francis.
Norman Cheetham and Noel Geoghan shared the 2’s pot.
Wednesday, Jan. 7, Royal Lakeside – Stableford
A Flight
1st Ed Wyckoff (11) 44pts
2nd Colin Davis (17) 44pts
B Flight
1st Goran Asp (23) 34pts
2nd Joe O’Hara (22) 35pts
Finding a course empty of Asian tourists at this time of year is always a problem, but Royal Lakeside fitted the bill perfectly on this Wednesday.
Ed ‘our man in the White House’ Wyckoff, and Colin ‘the Donkey’ Davis were co-men of the match as both returned excellent scores of 44 points. Ed edged The Donkey 21-20 on the inward nine and the latter must be getting his fair share of oats as this was his third pay window visit of the week.
B Flight was all at sea as Goran Asp picked up the gold with just 34 points. Goran was one stroke clear of Joe O’Hara.
Ed Wyckoff and Werner Pausch split the ‘2’s pot.
Thursday, Jan. 8, Pattana B & C – Stableford
A Flight
1st Phil Davies (16) 35pts
2nd Michael Delatraz (8) 34pts
3rd Brian Byrne (16) 31pts
B Flight
1st Werner Pausch (24) 36pts
2nd Christy Knight (22) 32pts
3rd John O’Neil (19) 30pts
Red & Senior Flight
1st Bruce Berlin (19) 35pts
2nd Barry Oats (23) 33pts
3rd Joe Tynan (26) 26pts
A cloudless sky, a baking sun and a well prepared course greeted the seasonally large field of golfers from Lewiinski’s when they visited Pattana to play a stableford comp. Three flights were needed on a day when no player bettered their handicap. One player however managed to play to par, B Flight’s man in form Werner Pausch. Werner was four clear of Ireland’s Christy ‘good’ Knight and yet one more clear of John O’Connor.
A Flight was very close with two players on 35 points but a count back was not required as Walter Panichi is not a member, so the flight honours went to Welshman Phil Davies. Michael Delatraz was a shot adrift in second place. A count back was required to separate Brian Byrne and Peter Hynard, both on 31 points, and Brian slid in as Peter was left practicing his Thai lingo.
The Red and Senior Flight was led by the man on form Bruce Berlin with 35 points. Barry Oats filled the silver spot two shots off the pace and two old soldiers went head to head for the bronze, Joe Tynan and Jimmy ‘two shots’ Elphick battling it out with the scales of justice falling in Joe’s favour.
Brian Byrne, Simon Kendal and Commander shared the ‘2’s pot.
Friday, Jan. 9, Pattavia – Stableford
A Flight
1st Colin Davis (17) 42pts
2nd Francis Goyons (14) 41pts
3rd Walter Baechli (15) 32pts
B Flight
1st Werner Pausch (24) 49pts
2nd Hank Terbraak (23) 41pts
3rd Mick Coghlan (21) 34pts
As though a signal was needed that this was to be his week, Werner Pausch fired a serve and volley at the field with a resounding 49 points to put a second winner’s medal on the mantle in as many games. Werner was a massive eight strokes clear of B Flight mate Hank Terbraak, and a further seven clear of Mick Coghlan.
The Donkey, who is riding his own purple patch, made it four pay window visits this week as he topped A Flight with a splendid 42 points. That was one clear of Hank Terbraak and a further eight clear of the often successful pair of Walter Baechli and Gordon Wallace; these two resorted to a count back to fill the bronze spot and the odd man out was Gordon.
Colin Davis, Werner Pausch and Hank Terbraak shared the ‘2’s pot.
